Top 5… books that need a prequel
Today’s Top 5 Tuesday is ‘books that need a prequel’, and is hosted by the super lovely Shanah over at the Bionic Bookworm, and you can check out her page here (please do, she’s amazing).
Blegh. I adamantly believe that most series do not require prequels. 99% of the time it feels like the author is just trying to cash in on the success of the series. List below for many examples. However, if you can pull it off Maas-style (The Assassin’s Blade is that unique 1% where the author killed it), then go for it.
So, here is my top five books (and/or series) that need a prequel:

- Nevernight by Jay Kristoff – let’s be honest, I would read Jay’s shopping lists if he published them… provided they had a map and some stabbing going on. However, while the books do go into detail about Mia’s past, and even Tric’s to some extent, I’d love to hear more tales of her growing up with Mister Kindly and Mercurio. (*sigh*)

-
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black – purely to read more Jude and Cardan stories. I have zero shame in admitting this. I love those two, the hatred between them is pure magic to read. And I would read a million more stories about them, particularly them growing up together.

- Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor – Brimstone was one of my most favourite characters, so I would love t o read more stories about how he raised Karou and so many tales about Issa, Twiga, Yasri and Kishmish. In fact, can someone get in touch with Laini?

- The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater – now, to be clear, I only want to hear about Ronan growing up being a Greywaren, Gansey and his magical quest addictions since he was 8, and Blue growing up in 300 Fox Way. Adam’s backstory is depressing, and Noah… is… Noah. So we’re really talking about 3 different prequels here because they were unaware of each other’s presence for most of this. (I can’t remember if it’s canon or fanfic where Gansey takes in Ronan after his dad’s passing and they have a bonfire and Gansey shaves Ronan’s head, but I’d like that in an actual story too.)

- Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo – honestly, this is mostly so I can understand everyone’s fascination with the Dregs (well, Kaz and Inej). I feel like if I had more context and could see more of Kaz I would probably dislike him less (unpopular opinion, I know… sorry).
Happy reading!

Jay Kristof’s shopping lists would be quite interesting. I imagine there would be lots of stabbing and clean ups in aisle 5! LOL!! I totally agree – I wish we had more from that world and those characters!
Thanks for participating – added you to the list 🙂

Did you hear that Maggie Stiefvater is writing a follow trilogy? Currently referred to as the Dreamer trilogy!

I think I heard about that. Are those the ones most people are calling the Ronan books?
