The 80's Movie tag

Good morning bookworms!
A couple of weeks ago I was tagged by the lovely Siobhan at Siobhan’s Novelties to do the 80’s Movie tag. This tag was originally created by Ashley at Infinite Library and she created the cutest graphics to go along with it (that I’m pretty sure everyone has borrowed as well)!
I’m pretty excited about this tag! However, despite being a child of the 80’s, my parents weren’t really into television and movies, instead preferring music and books, so I’ve actually not seen the majority of these films! (half is the same as ‘majority’, right?)
However, I can quote The Little Mermaid and The Secret of the Sword line by line though. (If you don’t know The Secret of the Sword, it’s the movie where She-Ra gets introduced to the He-Man universe and it’s AMAZING. I highly recommend it despite the trailer being TOTALLY dodgy looking.)
Let’s get started!

A BOOK THAT KEPT YOU UP ALL NIGHT

So, I don’t really read thriller or horror books, so there’s nothing that would keep me up because it’s scary… However, I did stay up all night long to finish The Raven King by Nora Sakavic (finished at 6:15 am) which is how I managed to get the entire trilogy read in just over 48 hours.
FYI – I have not watched this movie.

A WONDERFULLY QUOTABLE BOOK

I am actually getting two quotes from two books as my next tattoo. However, both books (and authors) are VERY quotable. My tattoos will be:
Safe as life.‘ – The Raven Boys, Maggie Stiefvater
The books we love, they love us back. And just as we mark our places in the pages, those pages leave their marks on us.‘ – Nevernight, Jay Kristoff
FYI – I have watched this movie.

A CHARACTER WHO LOVES BREAKING THE RULES

I love morally grey characters (wow, what a surprise, right?) so the characters I tend to enjoy the most don’t really ‘break’ the rules – they tend to flagrantly disregard that the rules ever existed. With that in mind, I’m going to stick with a small(ish) rule breaker (treason is small, right?): Asha from The Last Namsara by Kristen Ciccarelli.
FYI – I have watched most of this movie.

A BOOK COUPLE THAT TOOK AN ETERNITY TO GET TOGETHER

I’m trying not to use the same series twice for this tag, so that rules out Andrew and Neil from The Foxhole Court (but they would be my number one otherwise). That pretty much leaves me with the remainder of my enemies to lovers / slow burn romance tropes that I LIVE FOR. However, for this one I’m going with a couple that kind of still aren’t together, but fingers crossed they will be by mid-way through book three: Jude and Cardan from Holly Black’s The Folk of the Air trilogy. *sighs softly* ?
FYI – I have not watched this movie.

A BOOK INVOLVING TIME TRAVEL

I must admit, most of the sci-fi books I read are interdimensional travel, as opposed to time travel, so this one is a bit of a guess for me (but it is on my TBR so I will read it… eventually). But I’m 93% sure that Invictus by Ryan Graudin fits the bill for this prompt. (Please correct me if I’m wrong!)
FYI – I have watched this movie. This one or the second one. At least one of them. (The one where Marty’s mum hits on him… whichever one that is.)

A CHARACTER WITH A UNIQUE STYLE

Uhhhhh, the pink is throwing me, so I have to go with Kady Grant from Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. Kady is bad ass and doesn’t give a f*** what anyone things. Also, her pink hair is ah-mazing.
FYI – I have not watched this movie.

FAVOURITE BOOK INVOLVING TRAINING/MENTORING TROPE

Ahh, Rose and Dimitri of Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead 100% fit this trope (with the added bonus of forbidden love)! YAAAAAAASSSSSSS!! ?
FYI – I have not watched this movie, but I have seen the remake.

A BOOK WITH A TRIP THAT DOESN’T GO TO PLAN

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Do they ever? To be honest, I was tossing up between using this book for this prompt or the Top Gun prompt, but I have so many that I could use for a death, so this one it is. Meet Kaz Brekker and co who traveled seriously far lengths for reasons, and nothing ever went to plan, except that in the long run it all went to plan. Because Bardugo is sneaky and devious and Kaz is seriously twisted. The Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo.
FYI – I have not watched this movie.

A BOOK WITH THE CENTRAL CHARACTER’S NAME IN THE TITLE

Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend; and Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend.
Fun fact: These books are about a young girl by the name of Morrigan Crow.
FYI – I have watched this movie. And the three that come after it.

A FEMALE CHARACTER WHO COMES OUT OF HER SHELL

I feel like I need some more contemporary in my mix here, so I’m going with Anna Oliphant from Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. Anna starts off the school year in a foreign country knowing no one and unable to order food from the school cafeteria because she can’t speak French. She is taken under the wing of Meredith, her neighbour, and by the end of the book is spreading her wings!
FYI – I have watched this movie. Only like 100 times though.

A DEATH THAT TOOK YOU BY SURPRISE

I don’t know that I can stick with one book here, so I’m going to just dot point a couple (nine is a couple, right?), since obviously I can’t put details. It’ll make me feel better in the long run (also, I feel like I can double up now):

  • Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince – JK Rowling
  • Nevernight – Jay Kristoff
  • Crooked Kingdom – Leigh Bardugo
  • The Shepherd’s Crown – Terry Pratchett
  • Looking for Alaska – John Green
  • Wundersmith – Jessica Townsend
  • Looking for Alibrandi – Melina Marchetta
  • They Both Die at the End – Adam Silvera (don’t ask, I think it was more of a hope they wouldn’t than a shock)
  • Gemina – Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff (I threw this book twice while reading it because of unexpected character deaths)

FYI – I have not watched this movie. (I did watch the first 20 mins, but then I fell asleep.)

AN ENDING THAT LEFT YOU BOTH HAPPY AND SAD

OK, I am breaking rules all over the place now. I’m listing three books for this one for different reasons:

FYI – I have watched this movie.

TAGGING

Meaghan | Sophie | Rebecca | Shanah | Avonna
Mel | Inge | Lauren | JR | Romi

Until next time, happy reading ?? (or movie watching ?)
