Top 5… dystopian
Good morning bookworms!
Today’s Top 5 Tuesday is ‘top 5 dystopian’. Top 5 Tuesday is hosted by the super lovely Shanah over at the Bionic Bookworm. You can visit her here, and join in for Top 5 Tuesday by checking out all the amazing topics that are coming up!
FYI, this one is gonna be quick!! I don’t know why, but a lot of dystopian books just … don’t really do it for me. (I don’t know why, ok?)
LIFEL1K3 by Jay Kristoff. Look, I gotta be honest. This was good, and I enjoyed it, but I just didn’t love it the way that I love other Kristoff books. Maybe there wasn’t enough blood. Or maybe I would have preferred other characters die. Who knows?! Anyway, this was good (although I still need to finish DEV1AT3!!)
The Selection by Kiera Cass. This one seems to be a bit polarizing, but I enjoyed it the further the books went (although I did stop at The One – I’ve heard the next generation is pretty bloody awful). I thought America was interesting, could have done without the love triangle, hated the childhood friend (that I never remember the name of), but Celeste and the Prince I really liked. The ending was brutal enough for me as well!!
The Hunger Game by Suzanne Collins. I mean, I’d be pretty remiss if I didn’t add these to the list. I really liked these books, but what killed me on this one was the ending. Even before Gale was played by a Hemsworth *swoon*, I liked him better than Peeta. I guess I just never got the appeal of the Kind Boy (you can be a Soft Boy and still moderately evil).
The Eyes of Tamburah by Maria V. Snyder. This book gets a higher place because I’m only one book in, and Snyder is yet to disappoint me. Also, the world building in this is just cool, and also what will likely happen to us if we don’t fix climate change. Plus, we all like a badass hero.
Obernewtyn by Isobelle Carmody. I mean, one day I’ll stop screaming about this series… but it’s not likely that today will be that day. It’s dystopian, it’s got mutant children, there’s a corrupt government, the villain is super creepy, and there’s a snarky cat. Really the only thing this series is missing is a dragon… and there’s kind of one of them anyway!
I’m actually kind of impressed I got to five today (The Selection was a last minute addition…). As I said, I don’t really read dystopian books… I prefer my fantasy less real, and less sad about our future!!
Do you read dystopian books? What’s your favourite?

I struggled getting to 5 with this topic too. The Eyes of Tamburah sounds really interesting, so I might check that one out.

Great list! I’m surprised to realize that I haven’t read as many YA dystopian novels as I thought I have, but there are a few series that are on my TBR! Like the Legend series by Marie Lu and The Great Library series by Rachel Caine 🙂

I haven’t read either of those, but The Marie Lu series has been on my To Be Bought list for a while!!

Love this list! I totally agree with you about the Selection series, I was in the the group that actually liked those books, butI just couldn’t keep going after The One unfortunately. I haven’t read Obernewtyn but based on your description it looks like one that I’m gonna have to check out!
