Top 5… creepy atmospheres!

Good morning bookworms!

Today’s Top 5 Tuesday is ‘creepy atmospheres’! Top 5 Tuesday is hosted by the super lovely Shanah over at the Bionic Bookworm. You can visit her here, and join in for Top 5 Tuesday by checking out all the amazing topics that are coming up!

So… I don’t read thriller or horror books… like, at all. So, I will try my best for this week, but hopefully I will be all in for November!!

The Wicked Deep – Shea Ernshaw

The Wicked Deep

This book is about as creepy as I get. Sister-witches and hundred year curses and drowning boys. And apart from the ending, I really loved this book. (I just think it was too sweet, ok?! Apparently the creepy books that I do read, I want them to have a more murdery ending…) But yes, this cursed little seaside town with its fog and witches was dark and lovely.

To Kill a Kingdom – Alexandra Christo

To Kill A Kingdom

Murderous mermaids that keep human hearts under the floor in their bedrooms? Sure, that’s not creepy. (Said no one ever.) I mean, her mum was basically a certifiable evil sea witch, but still. Between all the family dynamics and the singing to compel people, is there really any wonder that this book makes the list?! I mean, especially when you compare the deep, dark underwater world with the light, bright, golden land – there is certainly a huge contrast!

Midnight Crossing – Charlaine Harris

Midnight Crossing

Of all the Charlaine Harris books I have read (and there have been quite a few), I think the Midnight series is probably the most creepy in its atmosphere. And yet, I also find it the most fascinating. Picture this: You are driving along a highway, in the middle of absolutely nowhere. You come up to a singular crossroad that has a singular traffic light. Surrounding this traffic light is a small garage and shop, a diner, a hotel filled with retirees, an antiques store and nail salon, a pawn shop, a small church and cemetery, and a shop that sells occult items. There are also some residences behind each of the shop fronts. This is the town / village / intersection that is Midnight.

The Price Guide to the Occult – Leslye Walton

The Price Guide to the Occult

Dark forests and coast lines and weeds that come and choke you in the supernatural fog. More witches that have been wronged and curses for generations. Yes, please. I’ll take 7 more of these. Also, Walton’s writing had such a beautiful, mystical flow to it. I really felt like I was there, almost drowning, in the cold dark water. Not to mention the blood and the compulsion and the spooky, spooky fog. Did I mention the fog?!

The Scorpio Races – Maggie Stiefvater

The Scorpio Races

I mean… if you thought you were getting away today without me screaming about this book, well, I’m sorry to disappoint. (I’m not really sorry. I will still be screaming about this when I’m dead.) The entire island of Thisby is creepy. Its murderous water horses that eat people and livestock for one month per year, the many blood rituals the town performs so as to ward off superstitions, the grisly cast of characters that probably belong in a carnival sideshow. This book will never stop having this beautiful yet hauntingly terrifying atmosphere.

I mean… maybe I do like creepy books?! Tell me some of your favourites!!
