WWW Wednesday — 6 March 2024

Hello friends!! Welcome to this week’s WWW Wednesday — 6 March 2024!!

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words, where you answer the three following questions:

  • What did you recently finish?

  • What are you currently reading?

  • And, what do you think you’ll read next?

Let’s see what I have been reading… (All images will link to Goodreads if you click on them. Potentially.)

what i finished

I think maybe I broke myself. Between all of the terrible to average books that I’ve been reading lately, I don’t know what I’m doing any more. Nothing is really scratching that itch to read good things. But, conversely, I think I keep putting down books that are probably enjoyable. Which makes no sense, even to me, as I write this.

So, I keep reading bad to average books, and then am surprised by how much I am not enjoying them. Also, I finished my re-read of The Mortal Instruments, and despite rating most of the series at 3 stars for the re-read (before I start The Dark Artifices), I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed City of Heavenly Fire. Which means either the book was better than I was anticipating, or this is another symptom of the kinds of books I’ve been reading lately.

And no shade to Cassandra Clare fans. I loved this series when it came out 10 years ago, but I’m not the same person and I don’t have the same likes as before. Maybe I was just happy that I finished it. Who knows.

what i'm reading

Do you know what I shouldn’t read when I’m mining through the dark space of poor reading choices? A book that has two main characters whose entire personalities are a pile of red flags.

Have I stopped to rethink my choices in reading this? No.

Let me back up a moment. When I stayed with my friend, Em, for the Taylor concert last month she’d just finished reading Magnolia Parks. Em’s synopsis was “It’s very drama-y, but if you enjoyed Gossip Girl [OG tv series], you should like it.” So I bought it on my Kindle. Then my friend Sara was all “OMG, so good, basically crack, love the drama, very Blair and Chuck.”

In the midst of my recent “wow I seem to keep reading terrible books with awful characters” landslide, I thought to myself, “what could go wrong?”

I think I need to stop reading romances. Take a break. Maybe read some dragon books or something. Because this level of toxicity in my life is obscene. I’m not even sure I want to finish this book. I think I just want to set my iPad on fire. But who knows, maybe the characters will redeem themselves.

Coraline by Neil Gaiman

Coraline by Neil Gaiman is on my March TBR. Why? Because it’s middle grade March, and it’s one of my 12 in 12 books for 2024. I WILL READ THIS BOOK. In March. 2024. Mostly because I need to tick off just ONE of my 12 in 12 books. Also it’s very short.

I think I haven’t prioritised Gaiman books for weird psychological reasons. I absolutely adored Neverwhere. It’s one of my fave fantasy books of all time. But because I love it so much, I worry that I won’t like anything else Gaiman has written as much. And if I don’t, will that temper how I feel about Neverwhere?

So, better be safe than sorry, and just never read any other Gaiman books, right?!! LOL. I really need my head examined some days…

Also, in case this wasn’t clear, I have not commenced Love, Theoretically by Ali Hazelwood, which was in this box last week.
