WWW Wednesday – 2 September 2020

Hello bookworms!! Welcome to WWW Wednesday – 2 September 2020!!

This is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words, where you answer the three following questions:

  • What did you recently finish?
  • What are you currently reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

Last week was a trash fire that we will not be mentioning… so this week’s post will cover TWO weeks, but I really only read 2 books (+ 1 DNF) the week before last anyway.

what i finished

week ending Tue 25 August

Yes, after the week that I read the most books ever in a week… I then went on to read… a “normal” amount again. I did have my very first DNF of 2020 though… ?

Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall

This book was super cute and very fluffy and just what I needed to make me HAPPY. Was it amazing? No. But it was fun and I enjoyed it immensely.
✅ Enemies to lovers
✅ Fake dating
✅ There’s only one bed
Plus Luc is the absolute disaster boy who has complex emotional breakdowns and trust issues from past relationships, that we all love. (Although maybe it’s just me.) If I was still giving half ratings, this one would have been a 4.5.

Mortal Instruments #4 City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra ClareThe reread continues. I’m finding that I’m actually enjoying the series more the longer it goes. My initial feelings of wanting to punch Jace, Alec and Clary have all but abated, and so if you’re reading this for the first time, please know that it gets better!! Around book 3 or 4. I’m still listening to this while gaming… I spent a fair chunk of time on Animal Crossing with this, but I’m also back doing drawing with it as well. My D&D character is coming along nicely!!

The Bro Code by Elizabeth Seibert

Wow. I don’t ever recall giving up on a book quite so quickly as I did this one. It’s probably a great story, but  I just could not continue. Reasons I DNF’ed at 11%:
? formatting (Netgalley really needs to improve because it kills me and i’ve all but stopped requesting).
? overuse of the word bro. please stop.
? the characters really annoyed me. it’s a 1st person teenage boy narrative, who has a crush/thing for his friend’s sister and. just no. the language and the way they talk about girls was toxic. girls aren’t a thing and you don’t get to choose for them what they do. it’s not up to the girl’s brother who they can date. if you don’t want to date your friend’s sister, that’s one thing, but if you “can’t” because of a stupid code, that’s something entirely different.

Well Met by Jen DeLuca

This book was ADORABLE. I really liked it, so much so that I kind of wish book 2 was a continuation with these characters, not the side ones. But the epilogue made me happy too, so I guess we can leave these two love birds there. But yeah, everyone who shouted at me to read this was correct. I loved it.

It was just super cute and you all need to read it if you haven’t!!

The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary

Yep. This book pretty much solidified Beth O’Leary as an auto-buy author from now on. I didn’t love this quite as much as The Switch, but it’s still amazing and lovely and I will now scream at you all to read this.
✅ There’s only one bed
✅ Friends to lovers
It was soft and beautiful and I really can’t scream about it more because I’m also trying to write a review for it and I have NO MORE WORDS. They are all reserved. But, just like in The Switch there were some really tough topics, and I think it dealt really well with the emotional abuse and domestic violence themes (but also, trigger warnings if you need them).

Amulet #7: Firelight by Kazu KibuishiI have ZERO CHILL when it comes to this series. If volume 9 is delayed I might just cry. Although, at the ending of this one I almost cried anyway… WHHYYYYY Mr Kibuishi?! Why would you do this?! This series is slowly killing me and I am trying VERY HARD not to read volume 8 today because I need answers.
SO MANY ANSWERS. *cries*
I highly recommend you read this series if graphic novels and fantasy worlds are your thing. It’s ridiculously good.

Honestly, I’m still feeling a little bit ‘slumpish’… but it could also be that I had my immune system wiped out last week and I have a sore throat with nothing to fight it. Maybe I just need a nap??

Winternight #2 The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden

This is the second book in the Winternight trilogy, and I haven’t really gotten started with it because I was expecting more Vasya, but instead it’s been Olga so far. Which is FINE, but I want more of Vasya and Morozko!! I will keep reading this one, I just got distracted last week… or that’s what we’re calling it, anyway!!
Although, I’m not sure I can hit this into the NEWTs prompts…
I made zero progress on this in the last fortnight.

Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert

I finally picked this one up after my slew of recent cute romances. It instantly became a loved book, and I’m having a hard time putting it down at night (but also I am tired!), but I should be done in the next couple of days. I also need to read 1,000 more Talia Hibbert books because these are LIFE. They honestly make me so happy.

I just want 80 million books like this. Ok, thanks.

Please Don't Hug Me by Kay Kerr

I have read about 2 pages of this because if I didn’t start it, then my friend Lucie (@whatluciesreading on Instagram) might have stabbed me.
(Except she’s in lockdown so she can’t actually get to me right now… silver lining benefits!!)
I can’t really tell you much about this except it has doughnuts on the cover and is an #ownvoices Autism story, and a debut novel from an Australian author.
And Lucie really loved it.

what's up next

The Iron King by Julie KagawaEvernight by Claudia Gray

While I acknowledge that I SHOULD be finishing the books above… we all know that is unlikely to happen until I get another 4 books on my “currently reading” pile. Books that I have put next to my bed this week include Evernight by Claudia Gray (yes, I want some vampire stories that aren’t Twilight related); The Iron King by Julie Kagawa; and I pulled The Dark Tide by Alicia Jasinska out again (I might actually finish it this time…?). On top of all that I need to start the next book in the Shadowhunters reread, so City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare will be my next audiobook.

What are you currently reading??

until next time, happy reading! Meeghan xo
