WWW Wednesday – 19 August 2020
Hello bookworms!! Welcome to WWW Wednesday – 19 August 2020! This is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words, where you answer the three following questions:
- What did you recently finish?
- What are you currently reading?
- What do you think you’ll read next?
Ahhh… remember last week when I was all “oh no! I’m heading for slump-ville!!”? Well… that NEVER happened!! ? I did a u-turn and took off in the opposite direction!!
Also, I’m sorry if the below is all disjointed. I have written this post three times now, but my site keeps crashing and I lose all of the words (autosave my butt!!), and it never sounds as good when you’re rewriting!!

This is probably the most I have ever read in a week… and the terrifying thing is that I didn’t read at all yesterday (because I worked and then rewrote this three times…)!!
YES!! I read finished this book, and it was so lovely. The fantasy part I was looking for literally kicked in the next page from where I had stopped before. I loved the wintery Russian setting. All the characters were great (once I figured out who was who), and it had just enough creepy vibes without being too scary!! If you haven’t read this and you like fairytale-esque books, I highly recommend this!!
The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

I smashed through this one while gaming on Friday night and Saturday. I have found the perfect balance between audiobooks and gaming!! Success!! It did mean that I now listen to audiobooks slower (I went from 1.3x to 1x). Because Animal Crossing means minimal reading I actually found it the perfect game to audiobook for!! The Sims is a bit harder – there were points where I had to pause the book to read things, but it was ok too.
City of Glass by Cassandra Clare
⚔️ ?♀️ ? ? ?
Honestly, I’m still not entirely sure how I felt about this book. It wasn’t what I expected in some respects, but also it was… just a twisted version. In saying that, I still guessed a lot of the plot, just not the final twist. I did read the whole book in one day (it’s almost 500 pages), so it was definitely captivating. If you’re looking for a very dark, high school setting romance, then this is one for you. I had a hard time remembering they weren’t at college though.
Riot House by Callie Hart
❤️ ? ?? ? ?
adjfkasldslajkl?!! That pretty much sums up all of my feelings while reading this adorable novella. Set after the Heartstopper series, this is technically a novella for Solitaire – and it makes me want to reread that book so much. Be warned that if you ARE going to read this, there are a heap of spoilers for Heartstopper. I’m a patreon supporter for Alice and am really up to date with the comics (halfway through Vol 4 apparently!) and there were spoilers for me. But then again, this has been out since before Heartstopper was a thing. It’s just been re-released as a physical copy and now matches the new covers for the other books. But it’s adorable and I loved it. ?
Nick and Charlie by Alice Oseman
⛱ ❤️ ?️? ?♀️ ? ? ?
This series is starting to get INTENSE!! I am trying (and failing) to space out the remaining books until the final book comes out. It’s set for November this year, but honestly, who even know what will happen… So, I have conflicting feelings because I want to read them all IMMEDIATELY, but also I want to wait!!
It definitely doesn’t help that I got a pile of graphic novels delivered this week which included Volumes 6-8!!
Escape From Lucien by Kazu Kibuishi
⚔️ ? ? ? ? ? ?
Technically I have started the below, but I’d be less than 20 pages (or equivalent) for both of them…
This is the second book in the Winternight trilogy, and I haven’t really gotten started with it because I was expecting more Vasya, but instead it’s been Olga so far. Which is FINE, but I want more of Vasya and Morozko!! I will keep reading this one, I just got distracted last week… or that’s what we’re calling it, anyway!!
Although, I’m not sure I can hit this into the NEWTs prompts…
The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden
⚔️ ? ?♀️ ? ?
Another one I’m not sure I can fit into the NEWTs prompts… But I have started the next book in my Shadowhunters reread. Unfortunately I’ve hit the point where I can’t remember what happens next. I know this because I swore I thought the events of City of Glass happened in whatever book 6 is called. I’m also at the point where I can’t remember which book comes next. (Rumours that started book 6 because I couldn’t remember which one number 4 was are vastly over-exaggerated. And potentially true.) But I’m planning another Animal Crossing session this weekend so I expect I’m smash through some of this then.
City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare
⚔️ ?♀️ ? ?
Yes, after the darkness that was Riot House I decided to try something much lighter and fluffier. And this one is making it happen in spades!! Although, I have only read about 30 pages and the MC hasn’t even met the other boy yet… I can tell this is going to be absolutely adorable, and precisely what I think I need next!! Also, I have totally just realised I have no idea what age category this is… Ooops?!!
Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall

I got a STACK of graphic novels in the post this week. What’s a stack? Well, at this count, it’s 12. Yep, my graphic novel dealer got copies of all the Rat Queens and Amulet volumes I was missing, PLUS a couple of others I have been wanting. So, I guess that my next read will depend on how much will power I have. My guess is either graphic novels, or NEWT prompts!! But I do want to read Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert sooner rather than later!!
What are you currently reading??

Thank you, Kaya!! I usually have to be doing something while listening to audiobooks, but I usually puzzles or sudoku or something. A friend suggested gaming, and it too a bit of trial and error, but we’re good now!!

What a great idea to listen to audio books while gaming! I’ll have to remember that.
meeghan
It only works (for me, anyway) if it’s a game where I don’t have to read much or listen to anything!! So games like Overwatch and Fall Out and Red Dead are totally out. But Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing are all a bit low key and it works!! The Sims I was pausing the book a couple of times when I had to read things!! ?

I loved Bear and the Nightingale and I’ve been meaning to finish the series – hopefully I’ll get to it soon!
I’ve also been wanting to read something by Alice Oseman since I’ve seen her mentioned by everyone!
Great post and I’m glad you didnt get into a slump!
meeghan
Thanks Vee!! I recommend starting with the Heartstopper graphic novels. They’re super cute and the drawings are adorable.
