WWW Wednesday — 18 September 2024

Hello friends!! Welcome to this week’s WWW Wednesday — 18 September 2024!!

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words, where you answer the three following questions:

  • What did you recently finish?

  • What are you currently reading?

  • And, what do you think you’ll read next?

Let’s see what I have been reading… (All images will link to Goodreads if you click on them. Potentially.)

WWW Wednesday — 18 September 2024

Friends… I am STILL off work. It’s now been so long I’ll be surprised if I remember where my office is when I do go back. I’m still out because I got a viral infection after the influenza A and the whooping cough and the allergic reaction to the CT scan (it’s been such a ride). All of this has severely triggered my asthma which really hadn’t bothered me at all since I was a kid (unless I run up 3 flights of stairs, which has me wheezing like an old person). So now I’m on like 3 different inhalers, steroids, antihistamines and antibiotics. My kitchen looks like a pharmacy. Also my GP gave me a shingles vaccine (because I’m immunosuppressed) and now I can barely even lift a book to read. Why do vaccines hurt so much?!

However, hopefully this time next week I will be cleared to return to work, and therefore driving my husband less mad. Please keep your fingers crossed for me.

what i finished

OMG I am crying. So, last week I was all (runs off to find exact quote): “I daresay that I will probably finish [The House for Lost Things] tomorrow though… I am going to need a light-hearted fluffy book for after [it] wrecks my soul. I also need to start one of this month’s book club picks.”

Now, I absolutely did need a light-hearted fluffy book. But about 20 pages after what I had already read. The House for Lost Things was making me cry so hard I had a coughing fit that I couldn’t come down from for about 15 minutes. So, I paused it and went in an alternate direction for a while.

I scoured my Kindle unread books and realised I had a series I’d borrowed from KU where I’d only read the first book. So I finished that. Then I read some graphic novels off my bookshelf because I realised in my owned books spreadsheet that I was too close to a 50:50 ratio of having the same number of physical read books to unread books. (It is currently 50.2% read books vs 49.8% unread books.)

Then it was time to return to The House For Lost Things. Which I finished and have now perished. I knew the book would break me, and it did. If I loved it any less I might be able to talk about it more. (Yes, I am absolutely using Emma miquotes after watching so many adaptations this past week.)

Also, this was my 100th book for the year so I hit my Goodreads goal. 🎉🎉🎉 This is the earliest I think I’ve ever completed it. And it probably means that I will read the most books I’ve ever read this year. Since I’ve been recording on Goodreads. Maybe not ever. Who knows how many picture books I read as a child.

Accidentally marrying a stripper in Vegas because your ex-boyf proposes to his new girl on your birthday two months after breaking up sounds like something I would do.

I loved that this was an accidental pregnancy book WITHOUT it being the main part of the whole book plot. And it was not predictable. I really enjoyed it.

This series was so much better than I expected. Would 100% recommend. It had spice, but it also had GOOD plot. So sweet.

I really love this series, despite the darkness of the themes explored in it. I especially love how Hades and Persephone are portrayed.

I have absolutely read these out of 0rder, and while I’m enjoying them, I think it might be more cohesive to get the order right as they are set after the show.

One million stars. I cried so hard I went through half a box of tissues and gave myself a headache. That this series wasn’t picked up by the publisher is a crime against literature.

what i'm reading

I am currently between books. I mean, technically I’m in the middle of like 17 books if you look at my Goodreads. (Don’t do that. It’s a sad state of affairs.) But The House for Lost Things broke me so much that I just need a small break. A palate cleansing period, if you will.

Which really just means that I’ve been playing a lot of Disney Dreamlight Valley, Cozy Grove, Coffee Talk and Aka. I’m thinking about getting Fabledom. It’s been that kind of a week.

what's up next

This Time it's Real by Ann Liang

Yes, I’m going to try and pick up This Time It’s Real by Ann Liang. As I said last week, this is the Bookish Chaos Discord server’s September pick. I’m hoping it’ll be like a K-Drama but in book form.

Other books I’m thinking about reading next are:

  • The Secret Service of Tea and Treason by India Holton

  • Sorrow and Starlight by Caroline Peckham and Susanna Valenti (I know, but I’m so wrecked that I think I could actually read this)

  • Belladonna by Adalyn Grace

  • Private Princess by James Patterson and Rees Jones

If you think any of those are good and you would recommend them, please let me know!! Or maybe you saw something else on my giant TBR list and you think I should read that instead. Just nothing soul destroying at the moment, please!!
