WWW Wednesday – 15 June 2022

Hello bookworms!! Welcome to this week’s WWW Wednesday — 15 June 2022!!

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words, where you answer the three following questions:

  • What did you recently finish?
  • What are you currently reading?
  • And, what do you think you’ll read next?

Let’s see what I have been reading!

what i finished

The Afterlife of the Party by Marlene Perez

Oh wow. I don’t know what it is about this year, but I seem to be reading A LOT of 2-3 star books. Like, an unfortunate amount. Don’t get me wrong, I know that sometimes I just want to read a medium-good trashy romance novel. And it scratches the itch (no pun intended) that I want it to.

BUT, I was hoping for more from The Afterlife of the Party. I don’t know why. Maybe I hold vampire books in higher regard than I thought I would. I shouldn’t. I did read Midnight Sun this year.

Anyway, the point is that I wanted this to be better, and it wasn’t. And I am disappointed. Although, probably not as disappointed as I would have been if I had bought a physical copy instead of an ebook. So, small mercies and all that.

Last night (aka the very early hours of this morning) I finished Book of Night by Holly Black. As with all Holly Black novels, the story gets thicker and twistier and darker the further you get through it. Needless to say, I absolutely adored it. Which was actually not the case when I started it. I think as my reading went on through the book my rating got higher, culminating in a 5 star read.

Also, that ending was NOT expected. Not like the ‘final battle’ ending. I mean the second last page ending. But it was also very Holly Black, so I also feel like maybe I should have expected it?! The clues were all there, and yet I did not pick them up. I really hope she writes a sequel. I’ve heard rumours that this will be a duology, but I’m not sure if they are ‘hopeful’ rumours or ‘factual’ rumours. I guess we just wait and see!!

what i'm reading

Ummm… again, nothing?! My 1:30 am finish of Book of Night means that I am, once again, between books.

what's up next

Since I am (again) in between books right now, this list is (again) kind of fluid. My next read will depend on what I feel like picking up tonight… But Book of Night has inspired me to keep pushing through some of the more darker fantasy reads I put on my June TBR!!

  • Into the Crooked Place by Alexandra Christo
  • A Deal with the Elf King by Elise Kova
  • The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh
  • Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones
