Top 5 things a bookworm would NEVER do

Hello friends!! Welcome to Top 5 Tuesday!! This week’s topic is top 5 things a bookworm would NEVER do!! This month has been all light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek topics (inspired by my TikTok doom-scrolling), and I hope everyone has been enjoying it as the small break I intended it for.

Speaking of smol breaks, I inadvertently had one this month. I was offered a promotion and spent a few frantic weeks onboarding a replacement, doing handover and then moving to my new job. I think it’s starting to settle down now (?!) but the new job means I’m in the office every day. Which means less time for me and more time on weekends doing laundry and housekeeping. Which in turn means, less reading and blogging. I still don’t understand how I managed to blog almost every day in 2019. Who was that girl?

If you missed the October-December 2022 topics they are out now!! Top 5 Tuesday was created by Shanah @ Bionic Book Worm, and is now being hosted here @ Meeghan reads.

top 5 things a bookworm would NEVER do

Staying with the tongue-in-cheek intentioned theme for this topic, these are all things that I HAVE done. Mostly be accident.

Leave their book on a plane

Plane seat pocket

Oh, I wish this were not true. But yes, I am the person who has accidentally left their current read shoved in the back of the plane seat in those super handy pockets. Not once, but TWICE.

Thankfully, neither book was a special or signed edition. But still, it’s annoying when you’re in the middle of a book and then you have to go buy another copy just to finish it…

Dog-earred a book instead of tabbing

To be fair, I was very young (like 18?) when I did this. And I’m not entirely sure that tabs even existed. (Yes, that’s how old I am. Although I was born after the internet and cell phones.)

Not that I have fixed this in any way since, as this is an actual photo of the book I did it to. But yes, shamefully, I folded down the corner of every page that I would now tab.

Throw a book they were reading

Dramatic re-enactment of me throwing Gemina

This photo is a dramatic re-enactment of something that happened a few years ago. When I read Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff I got so mad/upset at a scene that I literally threw the book away as I was reading it.

By ‘away’, I mean away from my body. Not like ‘in the trash’. Don’t get me wrong, I loved this book. Fave book in the trilogy. But that one scene got me mad. Also my copies of the Illuminae Files are signed and personalised… so I probably shouldn’t have. But, damn. I was not happy with Amie and Jay at the time.

Ripped a book in half

This one was a total accident. But it was also a Sweet Valley High book, so while I was upset about it at the time, I really don’t care now.

So, the story goes that I was arguing with my brother (not uncommon) and I was probably being passive-aggressive annoying about something (also not uncommon). But I was reading a book, or at least holding it at the time. And then we started fighting (I was like 13, ok) and he grabbed hold of the book, and I wouldn’t let go. And then the book just kind of tore in half. Right down the spine. And then I turned into the Hulk. (This is my villain origin story.)

Recommend their boss fae smut

Honestly, I’m still not entirely sure how this happened… OK, so for context, I don’t hide that I’m a reader at work. But I also don’t advertise what I read unless people want to talk about books with me.

My boss is also a reader, so she asked if she could follow me on Instagram to which I said “sure”. We then had a brief conversation about fantasy books and she ended up reading The Book of Night by Holly Black and loved it. At which point Kindle then started recommending her all sorts of things.

So when my boss asked me “Have you read A Court of Thorns and Roses,” I replied, “Yes, loved it, it’s a Beauty and the Beast retelling.” Because I was literally only thinking about book 1. And then a week or so later my boss said to me in a meeting, “Have you read the rest of the series?” To which I nodded, and she said, “It’s a bit SPICIER than I was expecting.” And then I wanted to quit my job, crawl into a hole, and die.

FYI, I have built an actual database of everyone who I have ever discovered that has joined in with a Top 5 Tuesday topic. Which means, I will be able to come and visit blogs every week to find your posts. So you won’t necessarily need to link your posts below (unless you want to). But, if you’re new or I’ve not found your blog, please drop a comment below with a link to your post, and I will add you!
