Top 5 series that I *still* haven’t finished
Hello bookworms!! Welcome to Top 5 Tuesday!! This week’s topic is top 5 series that I *still* haven’t finished.
Β
I did technically change the name of this week’s topic for myself, as when I originally saved the draft, it came up with a “top-5-series-I-haven’t-finished-3”. Which means that I already have 2 versions of this from previous years… And I can confirm that I have only finished one of the series from 2021 (but made progress in another as well), and none of the ones from 2019. It’s also a timely reminder that I need to go back and fix the formatting on my earlier posts when I add SEO to them. I won’t even be duplicating these lists today… π
Β
If you missed the January-March 2022 topics please see this link. Top 5 Tuesday was created by Shanah @ Bionic Book Worm, and is now being hosted here @ Meeghan reads.
top 5 series that I *still* haven’t finished
An Ember in the Ashes β Sabaa Tahir
I can confirm that I have finished book 1 of this series. I read An Ember in the Ashes back in February 2020. Then I decided that I would wait until A Sky Beyond the Storm came out. Then I thought I would wait until I got a copy of Sky. After that I didn’t have any excuses… I just haven’t read them yet.
Β
I do plan to read (at least) A Torch Against the Night this year. It’s on my 12 in 12 list. Suggested (very kindly) by my local bookstore. I’m behind on my February TBR (as discussed in yesterday’s Monday Mini), so I’m expecting it to just roll into March. So… maybe April??
Β
I do really want to get back to this though β Ember was a 5 star read and I absolutely loved it.
The Old Kingdom β Garth Nix
Now, when this series was only a trilogy, I was totally on top of it. I read Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen as a teenager, and then I did a reread in 2016. (Wow… I can’t believe it was that long ago.) Although, valid as Goldenhand came out in 2016, and I read it then too.
Β
However, Nix had also released a prequel, Clariel, in 2014 which I still haven’t read (and then managed to spoil myself for with Goldenhand). And just recently in November 2021, he released a second prequel, Terciel and Elinor. Neither of which I have read.
Β
I, personally, am normally a fan of reading books in release order, but I guess if you wanted to read them in chronological order it would be: Clariel, Tercial and Elinor, Sabriel, Lirael, Goldenhand. (With short stories from Across the Wall and To Hold the Bridge mixed in somewhere.) But what I really want, is more after Goldenhand.
Serpent & Dove β Shelby Mahurin
Yes, hello. Cue another book that I rated 5 stars and then never completed the rest of the series.
Β
Technically I did start Blood & Honey last year, but it was … not at good. For which I don’t blame Mahurin at all. I saw an interview with her not long after Serpent & Dove came out where she said she was writing a duology, but due to the success of S&D, the publishers asked for the story to be extended to a trilogy.
Β
So while I know B&H is mostly filler, I have high hopes for Gods & Monsters. I just need to get there first…
Havenfall β Sara Holland
I really liked Havenfall, despite it ending on a cliffhanger β which is normally something I despise. The characters and the world-building were great, the pacing was fast and it was a quick read.
Β
Which makes it all the more perplexing that I started Phoenix Flame when it came out (might have even been before it came out β I think I got a review copy…) but never finished it.
Β
I’m ever fairly certain that it’s only a duology, so I just need to finish the second book, and I’m done!!
Shadowhunters β Cassandra Clare
Now, I know this is a very broad “series”. I’ve read The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices and The Bane Chronicles. But it’s been so long since I’ve read TMI that I couldn’t really remember how it ends. Hence me doing a reread of the series (still ongoing).
Β
My problem with this is that this is around the time that Jace, Clary and Alec all start making dumb decisions, so I’m trapped in this mini vortex of stupid. I could just quit my reread and move onto the next book, which I believe is Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy. Or I skip that as well and head straight over to The Dark Artifices. But I’m kind of a stickler for reading order.
Β
Pray for me that I will find the motivation to finish this series… eventually!!

meeghan
I LOVED the first book. It was so good. I just need to finish the series!! π
Janette
I loved Terciel and Elinor when I read it last year. Hope that you manage to get round to at least some of these soon. XX
meeghan
Thank you!! (Me too!!)
dbsguidetothegalaxy
Hahaha I’ve only read TMI and that’s it π so much to catch up on π₯
meeghan
Youβll get there!! (But also, totally ok if you donβt!! π)
dbsguidetothegalaxy
If she’d just STOP PUBLISHING for a few years, then I think I’ll be ok π
meeghan
π€£π€£ good luck

Still need to finish Serpent & Dove as well. Been hearing mixed reviews about Blood & Honey and I just haven’t gone around them.
meeghan
Yeahβ¦ look B&H isnβt great from what I have read (maybe 100 pages). But Iβve heard itβs still worth it for G&M.
addyinbookland
I did hear B&H was sad so Iβm not looking forward to that right now. Iβm in no position to read anything sad right now π
meeghan
SAD?! Oh no!! Now I feel like I have to read it!!
addyinbookland
Yeah! My cousin told me it was sad towards the end and because of that she’s scared to read G&M π
meeghan
Oh my god. This is the worst news Iβve had all week!! ππ
addyinbookland
I’m sorry ππ

I am reading the shadowhunter chronicles so slowly. I read maybe 1-2 books a year. I need to pickup The Bane Chronicles because Magnus is the best.
This is my first Top 5 Tuesday.

Slowly is still faster than me ππ

I didn’t know Garth Nix continued the series! Now I’m wondering if I even finished the original books…
meeghan
Oh you definitely need a reread then!! It was worth every second I did mine to prepare for new books!!
suzannarivera
Same I definitely took a lot longer to read Blood & Honey as it didn’t grab me as much as Serpent & Dove. Hoping the last book picks up a bit. I have an Ember in the Ashes on my shelf but haven’t started it yet. I gave up with the Mortal Instruments series after the first book haha
meeghan
π€£π€£π€£ I don’t blame you one bit with the Shadowhunters!!
Emma
I’ve not finished the Ember in the Ashes series either and I think it has been so long since I read the first book (which I absolutely LOVED) that I won’t end up finishing it.
meeghan
Oh that’s a shame β but you gotta do what’s best for you!! π₯°
Kaya @ afictionalbookworm
An Ember in the Ashes is so good! And I love the Shadowhunter books but there are a LOT haha
meeghan
I am 9 books behind. And they aren’t small books by any means. Well, except for the Red Scrolls books. But the REST!!
Caro @ bookcheshirecat
Great post! You’re already farther along than me with Serpent & Dove! I haven’t even started the series yet despite being so excited π₯Ί I have also heard some mixed reviews about the sequel, though I feel a bit bad for the author now that I know that she had to deviate from her original plan!
meeghan
Yeah, the whole premise of extending to another, not small, book because the publisher thought it was best, is sad for Mahurin. But Iβve now that the story itself is sad!! So now I want to read it more π

I need to finish Havenfall too! The first book was just okay, but I was intrigued enough to continue. Then all the negative reviews came flooding in for the sequel, and I kept putting off reading it.
meeghan
Oh no!! I haven’t seen the negative reviews… or maybe I blocked them in my head?! π
vee_bookish
It has a Goodreads Community Rating of 3.33 ππ
meeghan
Vee!! I barely read blurbs on the backs of books, let alone what the Goodreads community thinks!! π

Bahahaahhaa ππ
Sophia (Bookwyrming Thoughts)
I need to finish An Ember in the Ashes as well! It’s been so long I think I need a reread of the first book… preferably not in audiobook mode because I remember struggling with that originally. But I mean… we could buddy read it? (If you want to, but I feel like we’d take forever, lol.)
meeghan
Honestly, it’s been so long since I’ve read Ember that I probably need a reread of it too… I want to say yes, but I will need you to yell at me if I call behind. Can I sign up for a coach-buddy read?? π
Sophia (Bookwyrming Thoughts)
I can barely coach my own self π€£ We can attempt it though!
thepunktheory
I was so excited about the second Havenfall book – and then it turned out to be so very mediocre. π
meeghan
Ohβ¦ well thatβs disappointing. π
tasya @ the literary huntress
Ugh yes I need to read Blood & Honey too but I got scared with all the negative reviews about it π’
meeghan
Same. We will get thereβ¦ eventually?! π
