Top 5 series that I *still* haven’t finished

Hello bookworms!! Welcome to Top 5 Tuesday!! This week’s topic is top 5 series that I *still* haven’t finished.

Β

I did technically change the name of this week’s topic for myself, as when I originally saved the draft, it came up with a “top-5-series-I-haven’t-finished-3”. Which means that I already have 2 versions of this from previous years… And I can confirm that I have only finished one of the series from 2021 (but made progress in another as well), and none of the ones from 2019. It’s also a timely reminder that I need to go back and fix the formatting on my earlier posts when I add SEO to them. I won’t even be duplicating these lists today… πŸ˜“

If you missed the January-March 2022 topics please see this link. Top 5 Tuesday was created by Shanah @ Bionic Book Worm, and is now being hosted here @ Meeghan reads.

top 5 series that I *still* haven’t finished

An Ember in the Ashes β€” Sabaa Tahir

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa TahirI can confirm that I have finished book 1 of this series. I read An Ember in the Ashes back in February 2020. Then I decided that I would wait until A Sky Beyond the Storm came out. Then I thought I would wait until I got a copy of Sky. After that I didn’t have any excuses… I just haven’t read them yet.

Β

I do plan to read (at least) A Torch Against the Night this year. It’s on my 12 in 12 list. Suggested (very kindly) by my local bookstore. I’m behind on my February TBR (as discussed in yesterday’s Monday Mini), so I’m expecting it to just roll into March. So… maybe April??

Β

I do really want to get back to this though β€” Ember was a 5 star read and I absolutely loved it.

The Old Kingdom β€” Garth Nix

Sabriel by Garth Nix - Australian coverNow, when this series was only a trilogy, I was totally on top of it. I read Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen as a teenager, and then I did a reread in 2016. (Wow… I can’t believe it was that long ago.) Although, valid as Goldenhand came out in 2016, and I read it then too.

Β

However, Nix had also released a prequel, Clariel, in 2014 which I still haven’t read (and then managed to spoil myself for with Goldenhand). And just recently in November 2021, he released a second prequel, Terciel and Elinor. Neither of which I have read.

Β

I, personally, am normally a fan of reading books in release order, but I guess if you wanted to read them in chronological order it would be: Clariel, Tercial and Elinor, Sabriel, Lirael, Goldenhand. (With short stories from Across the Wall and To Hold the Bridge mixed in somewhere.) But what I really want, is more after Goldenhand.

Serpent & Dove β€” Shelby Mahurin

Serpent and Dove by Shelby MahurinYes, hello. Cue another book that I rated 5 stars and then never completed the rest of the series.

Β

Technically I did start Blood & Honey last year, but it was … not at good. For which I don’t blame Mahurin at all. I saw an interview with her not long after Serpent & Dove came out where she said she was writing a duology, but due to the success of S&D, the publishers asked for the story to be extended to a trilogy.

Β

So while I know B&H is mostly filler, I have high hopes for Gods & Monsters. I just need to get there first…

Havenfall β€” Sara Holland

Havenfall by Sara HollandI really liked Havenfall, despite it ending on a cliffhanger β€” which is normally something I despise. The characters and the world-building were great, the pacing was fast and it was a quick read.

Β

Which makes it all the more perplexing that I started Phoenix Flame when it came out (might have even been before it came out β€” I think I got a review copy…) but never finished it.

Β

I’m ever fairly certain that it’s only a duology, so I just need to finish the second book, and I’m done!!

Shadowhunters β€” Cassandra Clare

Mortal Instruments #1 City of Bones by Cassandra ClareNow, I know this is a very broad “series”. I’ve read The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices and The Bane Chronicles. But it’s been so long since I’ve read TMI that I couldn’t really remember how it ends. Hence me doing a reread of the series (still ongoing).

Β

My problem with this is that this is around the time that Jace, Clary and Alec all start making dumb decisions, so I’m trapped in this mini vortex of stupid. I could just quit my reread and move onto the next book, which I believe is Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy. Or I skip that as well and head straight over to The Dark Artifices. But I’m kind of a stickler for reading order.

Β

Pray for me that I will find the motivation to finish this series… eventually!!
