Top 5… series I need to finish
Good morning bookworms!
Today’s Top 5 Tuesday is ‘series I need to finish’. Top 5 Tuesday is hosted by the super lovely Shanah over at the Bionic Bookworm. You can visit her here, and join in for Top 5 Tuesday by checking out all the amazing topics that are coming up!
Gentlefriends, I must say, it’s not very often that I start a series and don’t finish it quickly. The only real hinderance here is if I choose to DNF it (a la Hush, Hush), or if I’m waiting for the next book to be published… and no one wants to hear me continue screaming *again* about books that I’m waiting to be published… So, I have a slight variation on today’s topic. This will be my top 5, series that I own, and am yet to start… because I have a LOT of those.
Strange the Dreamer – Laini Taylor
You heard it here, folks. I bought Strange when it first came out. I was set to read it immediately. I LOVED the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy. And then the hype happened. People started screaming into the abyss about this book. Someone mentioned a cliffhanger, and onto the TBR pile book 1 went. Then came the announcement of Muse of Nightmares, and I got excited again. I preordered the hardcover Illumicrate editions with the sprayed metallic edges and the pretty ribbons (set of two, so they were matching). I gave away my Aussie large paperback. And they have continued to sit on my shelves unread, ever since.
The Firebird Trilogy – Claudia Gray
I don’t know what it is with me and science-fiction. It’s kind of like dystopian novels. I have to be super in the mood, and even then it’s hit and miss. Illuminae – hit. Hitchhiker’s Guide – miss. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And so sits this trilogy (and the Starbound trilogy, and the Unearthed duology, and Heart of Iron, and Aurora Rising) on my bookshelf, completely unread. The covers are SUPER pretty though.
The Dark Artifices – Cassandra Clare
Again, I’m not really sure why I haven’t read these yet… also how I haven’t run into spoilers on them… But, I have read The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices, and I have these… I just… haven’t started them yet. Again, part of it is because I hate cliffhangers (and I hear this one has some beauties), but also I haven’t had a chance since the final book came out!! Like, I have a lot of unread books, and these ones are MONSTERS. So, you know.. it’ll happen eventually!
A Darker Shade of Magic – V. E. Schwab
Actually, the most disgusting part of this is the number of Schwab books I own, and I’ve never read a single one of them. I’ve actually got this entire trilogy (although it was gifted by a friend), The Near Witch, the Villains duology and I think I have something else, but it’s not coming to mind right now. Also, I’ve picked up ADSOM about 5 times now, read the first chapter and then found something shinier to look at. Seriously, I feel like I know Kell’s coat inside out, plus the weird wooden elements game. Plus there’s a king and a letter. I might have read the first 3 chapters – but I’ve never gotten past there!
The Kingkiller Chronicle – Patrick Rothfuss
Probably more believable that the others, as we are still awaiting the final book in this trilogy… however, I have owned a copy of The Name of the Wind for quite a while now. I’d say about two years. And The Wise Man’s Fear I snapped up about a year ago when I found it in the matching hardcover. I have to be honest though. When I bought TNofW I thought it was a standalone, so there’s really no accounting for why I hadn’t read it by then… except that book addiction where we just buy LOTS of books and don’t read them. They are pretty editions though!
What’s a series that you haven’t finished (or started)?

I don’t need to finish any of these because I haven’t even started them… lmao oops I’m even more behind

Ha!! I haven’t started them either (I mean, not really!!)

I haven’t read any of these save all of Schwab’s stuff but OH MAN. Do try to finish ADSoM! That series has one of my favorite conclusions ever, plus gorgeous world building and amazing characters. If it’s not moving fast enough for you (a complaint some folks have, though I admit I like the pace since it lets me sink in deep), try her Villains books. Those move at a faster clip because they’re like comic books, but prose only and a little more serious and dark.

Funnily enough, I’m reading Vicious in a buddy read this month!! But I am coming back to ADSOM, I promise!!

I so need to read Strange the Dreamer. It’s probably way up in my alley and I just haven’t gotten around to it. ?? there’s so many Cassie Clare books I haven’t read yet. I just don’t like to think of them ? We don’t talk about how we’re still waiting for the third book in the Kingkiller Chronicles – mostly because they’re super thick and I know I’ll have to read them again once the third book FINALLY comes out.
I haven’t finished The Raven Cycle books yet hahaha

DB!! Go finish TRC!! Gansey is waiting for you!! (Ronan left already because he’s not patient. Adam is probably studying. Blue is at home figuring out how to save the world. And Noah is… somewhere?)
dbsguidetothegalaxy
?? Ronan would definitely leave.

I read the first Firebird book but I still haven’t picked up the rest of the series. I’d recommend it highly though for the timey-wimey stuff. I did not have the best experience with The Name of the Wind though.

I’ve heard amazing things about A Thousand Pieces of You!! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!!
And yes, I’ve heard mixed reviews about TNotW, but the synopsis just sounds so magical that I’m willing to give it a try!! I’m just one of those people who will buy the whole series before reading it though, because I’m crazy and I hate waiting for the sequel!!

Beware Of The Reader
Hahaha I love your tweak of today’s topic Meeghan! And my daughter is the same about lady Midnight LOL

It’s just… SO BIG!! I think because I have the Aussie large paperbacks so they’re tall as well. They look bigger than Illuminae. It’s basically insurmountable!! ??
PerfectlyTolerable
There is a Parks and Rec scene where Ann says “You made me watch all 8 Harry Potter movies. I don’t even like Harry Potter!” and Leslie replies “That’s insane! You Love Harry Potter! You’ve seen all 8 Harry Potter movies.” I feel like that is you except with owning all Schwab’s books ?? Maybe try Vicious or one of your other ones next time instead of trying ADSOM again ? Maybe you will like it better?
Meeghan reads
??? this is EXACTLY me!!
Also, I’m doing a buddy read with Vicious this month!! I’m going to crack that Schwab cherry… and hopefully love it?!

They are naked hardcovers! I can try and remember to check the publisher for you in the morning if you like? (I’m lazy and don’t want to get out of bed…) ?

May!! I finally found your comment (I’ve been looking for it for weeks…) These versions of the Rothfuss series are by Gollancz, and they are the 10 year anniversary editions. Which means that when the third book finally comes out, I’m going to have to wait another 10 years to buy it, and then hope that the publisher still makes those matching covers… *crying*
Veronika @ Wordy and Whimsical
I really enjoyed A Thousand Pieces of You, and was then let down by the second book (if I remember correctly, I read it ages ago), so I never finished the series. There was just one particular scene that was very icky and meh. *shudders* The covers are GORGEOUS – some of my favorites of all time, I think. I’m in the minority here, but I gave up on Darker Shade of Magic after the second book, and I hated Lady Midnight, so I never continued the series. I’m SORRY, I should encourage you to read them, not drag them, but my god, I don’t get the hype. Strange the Dreamer I’m very interested in, but also scared of, because it promises to be very slow-moving. Hope you’ll get to these, Meeghan! 🙂
Meeghan reads
??? Thanks Veronika!! You’re not the first person I’ve heard that news about A Thousand Pieces from!! It’s part of the reason I’ve put off reading them for so long… but they are GORGEOUS books!! ??
