Top 5 series I need to finish
Hello bookworms!! Happy Tuesday!! This week’s Top 5 Tuesday is top 5 series I need to finish.
Continuing this month’s topics where I have personally victimised myself, I would also like to extend an apology to DB for today, which I’m sure will become more obvious later on.
Today’s post is all about those series that you’ve started, and for one reason or another, you just haven’t quite gotten around to finishing… ?
If you missed the February topics post, please click here!! Top 5 Tuesday was created by Shanah @ Bionic Book Worm, and is now being hosted here.
Top 5 series I need to finish
Shades of Magic – V. E. Schwab
Yes!! I FINALLY read A Darker Shade of Magic last year. I… thought it was fine. But I don’t really get why Lila and Kell are so loved by the fandom. I’m hoping that they get better in the other two books.
But one of the other reasons that I haven’t read any of the others in the series is that I really liked the Dane twins as the villains!! I also like Holland (who I am absolutely certain will be back), but the others I could take or leave. And I really hope that Rhy gets some more page time. However, I still really want to finish this series!!
cough I also haven’t finished the Villains series by Schwab…
My review for book 1 is here.
Grishaverse – Leigh Bardugo
I REALLY want to finish this series before April when the Netflix show starts… But it’s getting closer and closer, and I just haven’t *quite* gotten around to it yet. It probably doesn’t help that I don’t particularly love The Darkling, Alina or Mal… But, again, I’m hoping they get better?!! Surely they must (or at least the Darkling? I don’t think Mal will get better than a wet piece of cardboard).
I have tried to start Siege and Storm about 5 times now… so, keep your fingers crossed that I’ll actually get into it soon!!
My review for book 1 is here.
The Winternight Trilogy – Katherine Arden
I also finally read The Bear and the Nightingale in 2020, and I loved it SO MUCH!! I do tend to love books that feature Slavic mythology and retellings of Russian folklore. But the story of Morozko, the frost demon, is one of my faves. In saying that, Baba Yaga and Ivan and the Bear are also some of my faves. And I hear that they are featured in the rest of the series… So what exactly am I waiting for??
That’s a very good question. I’m not entirely sure how to answer it. So… I guess I won’t answer it?!! I’m also hoping that I get to The Girl in the Tower soon!!
Percy Jackson – Rick Riordan
I’m fairly certain that I’m the last person on the planet to have read the Percy Jackson series. In all fairness, I did read The Lightning Thief way back in 2018. I just, never read anything else after it.
Actually, that’s not entirely true. I read some novella that is set at like 1.5 of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Something about Ares and a chariot?? It’s been a while.
Anyway, I keep meaning to read the rest of the series – and then some more Riordan books. I just haven’t squeezed them in yet. Also, fingers crossed that Disney don’t screw up the new adaptation they are doing.
My review for book 1 is here.
The Curse Workers – Holly Black
Hello. My name is Meeghan, and I am the WORST buddy reading buddy in the history of buddy readers. I’m not even sure that made sense, but let me give you some background…
A millionty years ago, DB @ DB’s Guide to the Galaxy, and I met up on a Discord chat. We discovered that we both loved Holly Black but hadn’t read her Curse Workers series. So, we decided to buddy read them. I read White Cat in three days. 12 July 2019 to 15 July 2019. Five months later, I started Red Glove on 21 December 2019. And I have still not finished it.
I don’t even have an excuse because I was really enjoying it. I just… got distracted and now it’s 2021. And poor DB finished it in July 2020. We STILL HAVE A CHAT on the Discord server. (Sam, I am so sorry!! I swear you aren’t holding it for nothing.) My plan is to finish this series in 2021. Actually, I’m going to make this my mission. Someone hold me accountable. Wait… I already have someone to hold me accountable!!
My review for book 1 is here.

The Winternight Trilogy is one of my favourite series of all time! I really loved the entire Shades of Magic series, but I’m also really into Regency history so it was right up my alley to begin with. I read the Grisha books several years ago and I’m a little apprehensive about how well they’ll hold up, but I am excited about watching the series!
meeghan
Oh yay!! I’m so glad you loved them all!! I’m really keen to see what they do with the show. It’s one I won’t mind if they switch some things up.
Kaya @ afictionalbookworm
I desperately need to reread the Grishaverse books before I start the show haha! And Percy Jackson is SO good, I hope you enjoy the rest of the series!?
meeghan
Thanks Kaya!! Good luck with your reread!! ?

??? I LOVED THIS POST!! I don’t feel bad about us not having finished our buddy read because I’ve barely been reading or blogging so ? But I do think we should maybe finish the series soon. Soon-ish.
OH, do you want to start a buddy read of Grishaverse or Percy Jackson?? ??
meeghan
DB!! I’m surprised you want to start another Buddy read with me!! ?? I’m up to book 2 of both series, but yes I’d be keen ?
dbsguidetothegalaxy
I don’t have the Grishaverse trilogy and pretty much never go to the physical library in town ? but I can definitely read PJO with you! Which social network are you more active on? So I can catch up (read book 1 and see where you are in book 2
meeghan
Usually discord or Instagram. Let me know ??
dbsguidetothegalaxy
Will do!
Hanna
I really need to finish Percy Jackson as well!
meeghan
I believe in you!! (Happy to be your personal cheerleader!!)

No spoilers, but if you like Holland, you should absolutely continue with the Shades of Magic series! My love for him just grew and grew until he was one of my favorites. I also need to finish up the Winternight trilogy. It seems like forever ago that I read Bear & the Nightingale, and I loved it, so have no idea why I haven’t continued, either!
meeghan
Oooh. That’s the best recommendation I’ve ever heard for the Shades of Magic series. Everyone else just talks about Kell and Lila. Thanks Mary!! ?
thepunktheory
Uhhhhh I read just about everything Rick Riordan wrote and loved it soooo much. Grishaverse is also pretty great, but I liked the Six of Crows duology part better than the Shadow & Bone books. So, maybe give those that a shot instead! 😉
meeghan
Hahahaha, I started it the wrong way around. I read Six of Crows first and LOVED them. Now going back to her earlier stuff is torture. But I really want to meet Nikolai so I can read King of Scars. It’s a vicious cycle!! ??
Louise @ Monstrumology
I need to finish the Shades of Magic series too! I finally got my own copies of them so I can blast through them but it’ll probably be a while before that happens, haha.
meeghan
Ooh!! I wish you heaps of luck and hope you love them, Louise!!
