Top 5… fantasy… this year
Good morning bookworms!
Today’s Top 5 Tuesday post is ‘fantasy’, however, given my top 10 faves of all time was 90% fantasy, I’m going to mix it up a little and give you my top 5 fantasy books THIS YEAR. Which really, should be a pretty short list given my complete contemporary / romance binge I’ve been on lately.
Top 5 Tuesday is hosted by the super lovely Shanah over at the Bionic Bookworm. You can visit her here, and join in for Top 5 Tuesday by checking out all the amazing topics that are coming up!
OK, so I keep some pretty detailed spreadsheets (that I’m fairly lax on updating *cough*… I have just spent 20 minutes updating it so I can do this post. Past Meeghan is the WORST.) so, I can give you the FULL report!
Holly Black’s The Wicked King is definitely up there with fantasy novels I have read this year. I am basically holding my breath until November and crying in anticipation. Oh gawd… it’s not going to end well, is it?! ?
Brigid Kemmerer’s A Curse So Dark and Lonely was one of my most anticipated books of this year and I think it delivered in SPADES!! I loved this one so much, and am so looking forward to A Heart So Fierce and Broken on 7 January!! ?
These two books have definitely been getting some love from me lately, but I can’t help it, they’re just so good!! Jessica Townsend’s debut series Nevermoor (and sequel Wundersmith) are definitely on my top 5 fantasy reads this year!! If you’re looking for the next HP – this is it!!
Another middle grade book, Sophie Anderson’s The House with Chicken Legs broke my heart (I was seriously bawling in this) with its beautiful adaption of Baba Yaga’s story from Russian folklore, in a brand new context. Also, the cover is GORGEOUS!!
I was actually going to give the fifth spot to The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater as I’ve just finished a reread, buuuuut, then I thought I might take this time to tell you guys about a book I just finished, which was pretty damn good instead. Maria V Snyder’s new series The Archives of the Invisible Sword starts with a bang with The Eyes of Tamburah. Part dystopian, part adventure and part fantasy, this book has basically everything you need in a book, with the exception of dragons. I highly recommend, and my review will be out very soon!!

I’M SO EXCITED TO READ A CURSE SO DARK AND LONELY! the hardcover of it is also so beautiful, and honestly i just drool when i look at it during a bookstore visit. I’m also so excited for qon, and i cannot wait to see how Holly Black will resolve Jude and Cardan’s story arcs. The House with Chicken Legs also sounds so good, especially since I haven’t read anything inspired by the myth of Baba Yaga before!

Ooooooh, you are in for a TREAT!! ACSDAL is such an amazing Beauty and the Beast retelling. I loved it!! I can’t wait for A Heart So Fierce and Broken, and Bloomsbury announces today that it’s going to be a trilogy, not a duology so there WILL BE MORE BOOKS!! ?
Also, if Cardan and Jude don’t end up happy and in love and together at the end then I will drown the world in my tears. (Like, probably will happen.)
