Hello friends, and welcome to top 5 Tuesday where I will be discussing my top 5 cute covers on books.

You know that saying about not judging a book by its cover?

I agree with it. Mostly.

Ok, fine. Sometimes.

Because while a beautiful cover won’t make me buy a book on its own, it will absolutely make me stop walking, pick it up off the shelf, and read the blurb. Covers are a book’s first impression, and some of them are so charming that they practically demand to be taken home.

And who am I to refuse a book that wants to come home with me?

While putting this list together, I noticed I’d accidentally wandered into a very specific aesthetic. Apparently, if you put books, baked goods, witches, magical creatures, cosy illustrations, or just a general sense of whimsical chaos on a cover, I’m immediately interested.

At this point I’m beginning to suspect I don’t just have a favourite genre — I have a favourite lifestyle. (Hedgewitch for life.)

These are five book covers that made me smile before I’d even turned the first page.

Bookshops & Bonedust – Travis Baldree

This cover is basically my personality in book form.

There’s a tiny bookshop with books absolutely everywhere, pastries tucked into corners, a bird-pug keeping watch, and a hot orc. Look, I don’t make the rules.

Warm autumn colours somehow make everything feel cosy rather than spooky, and every time I look at it I notice another little detail hidden among the shelves.

It also perfectly represents the story itself: warm, comforting, quietly funny, and full of people you’d happily spend an afternoon with.

If I could climb inside one illustrated book cover and live there, this would be a very strong contender.

Apprentice to the Villain – Hannah Nicole Maehrer

I genuinely laughed the first time I saw this cover.

Everything about it tells you exactly what kind of story you’re about to read. The expressions, the playful typography, the tiny fantasy details, the mounted unicorn head, Kingsley in shackles hanging from the ceiling. And it doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is exactly why it works.

What I love most is how it leans into the humour without becoming cartoonish. It’s highly polished, clever and completely captures Evie’s wonderfully chaotic energy.

Honestly, I probably would have picked this up on the cover alone, and the fact that the book is just as entertaining feels like an added bonus.

Kiki’s Delivery Service – Eiko Kadono

If “comfort” could be turned into a book cover, I think it would look something like this.

A young witch, a black cat, a broomstick, and a beautiful little island town — what more could anyone possibly need?

This cover is “sweet cute” and perfectly captures that cosy, storybook feeling that makes you want to curl up under a blanket with a cup of tea and spend the afternoon reading, all while feeling timeless in a way that very few covers manage.

Also, let’s be honest. You had me at the cat on the broomstick.

Hopeless Necromantic – Shiloh Briar

Who knew a necromancer could be this adorable?

Everything about this cover feels delightfully ridiculous in the best possible way: the almost lime green palette shouldn’t work with skeletons and two idiots (who will probably soon become my favourite characters), and yet somehow it absolutely does.

It’s funny before you’ve even opened the book, and the title makes me smile, the artwork makes me smile, even the tiny corner skeletons make me smile.

This is exactly the sort of cover that reminds me books don’t always have to take themselves seriously.

The League of Gentlewomen Witches – India Holton

This cover is completely and utterly bonkers.

So, of course, I adore it.

Elegant Regency dresses meet a beautifully illustrated colour palette, with a broom and a sword mid-duel and the promise that something utterly ridiculous is about to happen.

Somehow it manages to look sophisticated and completely unhinged at the same time, which is honestly a remarkable achievement.

The cover perfectly matches India Holton’s wonderfully absurd sense of humour, and I don’t think I’ve ever looked at it without smiling.

Apparently I have a series problem

So… looking back over this list, I realised I haven’t actually chosen what most people would probably call the “cutest” covers.

Instead, I’ve chosen the ones that make me feel happy. Colourful without being overwhelming, whimsical without being childish, and cosy without losing their sense of adventure.

Quite accidentally, almost all of them feature some combination of books, baked goods, witches, skeletons, magical creatures, or general woodland energy.

I’m beginning to think my ideal retirement plan isn’t actually retirement at all.

It’s becoming the slightly eccentric hedge witch who lives in a cosy cottage in the forest, bakes pastries for unsuspecting travellers, lends out books (only joking!), and is regularly followed around by an assortment of suspiciously intelligent woodland creatures.

Honestly… I’ve had worse life goals.
