Top 5… couples I don’t think stayed together
Good afternoon bookworms!
Today’s Top 5 Tuesday is ‘couples I don’t think stayed together’! Top 5 Tuesday is hosted by the super lovely Shanah over at the Bionic Bookworm. You can visit her here, and join in for Top 5 Tuesday by checking out all the amazing topics that are coming up!
AH-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I feel so validated in last week’s topic because I started screaming about couples already. (Would you believe that I never even looked at this week’s topic until now?!) So, shall we dig in more on my ranting!!
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
ROMIONE IS DEAD, friends. D. E. D. DEAD.
I’m not even going to spoiler this for you (mostly because I already screamed about it a teeny tiny bit last week…) But, there is no equality in this relationship. Hermione is just going to tell Ron what to do for the rest of his life. He won’t challenge her. They’ll argue over something stupid and Ron will go to the pub for butterbeer or fire whisky, and they’ll both be deeply unhappy forever. This whole ‘shared purpose’ relationship premise will get old. Hermione will run into Draco one day (a reformed Draco who is also deeply unhappy) and there will be a spark. (This is in the universe where, sadly, Fred is still dead.) Or Krum. Or anyone who has an emotional range bigger than a teaspoon.
Shadow and Bone
Look, it’s not that I hate Alina and … well, anyone. It’s probably just that since I haven’t finished the trilogy I haven’t seen either of Alina’s potential suitors show any positive traits yet!
SPOILERS
I don’t even know if these are spoilers… but I just feel like Alina should learn to stand on her own two feet, and not always be cowering at Mal’s side. Also, I’m not sure where the Darkling’s “positive traits” might start (he’s kind of an asshole), but surely they are somewhere given the intense following that he has sparked.
Grim Lovelies
Anouk reminds me of Alina a little bit. She’s learning how to be her best self (but Anouk’s far less boring) and I think she needs to learn to stand on her own two feet first.
SPOILERS (for Midnight Beauties also)
Look, this is starting to emerge as a pattern, but I think a strong woman should be able to lean on a strong man, and Beau ain’t that man. I wanted Anouk with Rennar, except then he turned into a crazy person and was his character was ruined. I mean, he was always a little bit off, but I thought that when the beasties sided with him then all was forgiven!!
The Eyes of Tamburah
SHYLA!! Don’t do it!! Ok, so if you haven’t read the book or my review, there are three potential love interests for our leading lady: the Prince, the Rebel and the Guard. (And I can’t remember anyone’s name and I’m away for work again…) Honestly, I couldn’t really see her with any of them.
SPOILERS
I mean, really, friends? The three of them all had their own reasons for wanting to be with Shyla and none of them were for her benefit. I’m still salty that she chose the guard. I think the rebel would have been the best choice, and at least the prince would have been interesting!! (Because he is totally going to turn evil!!) I honestly can’t even remember why she didn’t choose the rebel… surely there was something wrong with him.
Lola and the Boy Next Door
What was Cricket even thinking?! I’m sorry, you all know how much Lola annoys me.
SPOILERS
Seriously?! Like, I never got what he saw in her. And I also felt like she just wanted Cricket because he was nice to her when her boyfriend wasn’t. And their whole relationship was off kilter. I just didn’t like it. I don’t have conclusive reasons like Romione, I just think that one day Lola will cheat on poor Cricket, and that will be that.
I’m so sorry if I killed your OTP (unless it’s Romione)!!
Who do you think would break up at the end of the book??

I didn’t like a single one of the pairings we got in the Harry Potter epiloge – least of all Romione. Just no.

I’m so glad it wasn’t just me!! TBH I didn’t even really get Tonks and Lupin… but they had such a sad ending that I couldn’t really put them on the list!!

With Tonks and Lupin I feel rather indifferent. There’s just not enough information on them as a couple (or on Tonks in general) for me to for an opinion about them. But I definitely don’t love the pairing either.

You’re totally right about Ron and Hermione, there is no way they will be happy!

Romoine needs to die! I hate them together so much!!! But at the same time I wonder if she would allow the failure of divorce in her life……..?
Meeghan reads
Absolutely not!! Although, is divorce a failure?! I think it’s more admitting that you made a mistake, or that you’ve changed as a person. That’s not always a bad thing.
Shanah - Bionic Book Worm
I don’t think divorce is a failure at all! There’s no problem with admitting that something isn’t working and making changes for your happiness. I just think that the character herself would see it as a failure. I totally said that wrong ?
Beware Of The Reader
Well Meeghan I just HAD to tweak this week’s theme, being the big romantic and all…

I have the same issue with m/f ships! I wish strong female characters had a strong partners to support them. Instead, we get dudes like Ron and Mal. NOPE.

Just… ????!! No thanks!!

Girl, I could go on and on and on about how wrong each love interest in the Shadow of Bone trilogy is. For an author who created nothing but excellent couples in Six of Crows, Bardugo didn’t do too well with Alina. I don’t particularly like Alina, and part of the reason is that her interest in the male characters seems to defy her throughout the whole series. It’s tiring and unrealistic – she is one of the strongest grisha in their world, SURELY she doesn’t need a man to lead her??
I actually like Romione and Cricket and Lola, though haha. That said, I read both ages ago, so it’s not like I can break out in a supportive debate over them, lol. Great post, Meeghan! 🙂

Thanks Veronika!! Also, I agree!! Alina doesn’t need anyone and it’s so frustrating to read about her blindly clinging to men in this series!! ?
