Top 5 books with baked goods

Hello friends!! Welcome to Top 5 Tuesday!! This week’s topic is top 5 books with baked goods!!

This Thursday, 14 March is International Pi Day. Something about 3.14… maths, circles, other math/sciency things. Look, I read a lot of fantasy and romance. I don’t need to understand how to calculate a circumference.

So, instead of picking 5 books that have something to do with math or STEM (let’s be honest, my top 5 of this would be a list of Ali Hazelwood books), I decided to go down the PIE route instead. Hence we are going our top 5 books that have baked goods in them. Or on them. Or are themed around. You could even do your fave recipe books this week.

And, lucky me, I happen to read a lot of books that feature cake. For weirdly unknown reasons. I have previously even done a post on books that feature reality cooking shows — which is super niche. I’m still not entirely sure how I ended up with so many of these…

If you missed the January-March 2024 topics, they are out now!! Top 5 Tuesday was created by Shanah @ Bionic Book Worm, and is now being hosted (albeit very terribly) here @ Meeghan reads.

So, let’s look at some of my fave books that feature pie. Or bread, cake, cupcakes… You get the picture.

Legends and Lattes series — Travis Baldree

Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree

After a lifetime of bounties and bloodshed, Viv is hanging up her sword for the last time.

The battle-weary orc aims to start fresh, opening the first ever coffee shop in the city of Thune. But old and new rivals stand in the way of success not to mention the fact that no one has the faintest idea what coffee actually is.

If Viv wants to put the blade behind her and make her plans a reality, she won’t be able to go it alone.

But the true rewards of the uncharted path are the travelers you meet along the way. And whether drawn together by ancient magic, flaky pastry, or a freshly brewed cup, they may become partners, family, and something deeper than she ever could have dreamed.

Winner Bakes All series — Alexis Hall

Following the recipe is the key to a successful bake. Rosaline Palmer has always lived by those rules well, except for when she dropped out of college to raise her daughter, Amelie. Now, with a paycheck as useful as greaseproof paper and a house crumbling faster than biscuits in tea, she’s teetering on the edge of financial disaster. But where there’s a whisk there’s a way… and Rosaline has just landed a spot on the nation’s most beloved baking show.

Winning the prize money would give her daughter the life she deserves and Rosaline is determined to stick to the instructions. However, more than collapsing trifles stand between Rosaline and sweet, sweet victory.  Suave, well-educated, and parent-approved Alain Pope knows all the right moves to sweep her off her feet, but it’s shy electrician Harry Dobson who makes Rosaline question her long-held beliefs about herself, her family, and her desires.

Rosaline fears falling for Harry is a guaranteed recipe for disaster. Yet as the competition and the ovens heat up, Rosaline starts to realize the most delicious bakes come from the heart.

Kiss My Cupcake — Helena Hunting

Kiss My Cupcake by Helena Hunting

Blaire Calloway has planned every Instagram-worthy moment of her cupcake and cocktails shop launch down to the tiniest detail. What she didn’t plan on? Ronan Knight and his old-school sports bar next door opening on the very same day. He may be super swoony, but Blaire hasn’t spent years obsessing over buttercream and bourbon to have him ruin her chance at success.

From axe throwing (his place) to frosting contests (hers), Blaire and Ronan are constantly trying to one-up each other in a battle to win new customers. But with every clash, there’s also an undeniable chemistry.

When an even bigger threat to their business comes to town, they’re forced to call a temporary time-out on their own war and work together. And the more time Blaire spends getting to know the real Ronan, the more she wonders if it’s possible to have her cupcake and eat it too.

The Curvy Girls Club series — Kelsie Stelting

Curvy girls deserve happily ever afters too.

I’m a big girl, “plus-sized,” whatever. I’m sick of hearing about it, especially since my doctor diagnosed me with PCOS. So when Mean Girl Merritt shot her mouth off about how fat people should just lose weight, I couldn’t take it anymore.

And now I’ve got a huge problem. To prove curvy girls like me can get happily-ever-afters too, I have to get our school’s quarterback, Beckett Langley, to take me to homecoming. And he doesn’t know I even exist.

But it’s not hopeless. Four other girls just like me are willing to help, because enough is enough.

I will not lose this bet.

Corinna Chapman series — Kerry Greenwood

Devil's Food by Kerry Greenwood

Earthly Delights is the first book in the Corinna Chapman series, but the cover I have is of a dominatrix holding a whip, which makes sense with the story, but less in the context of this topic. So I have chosen to share the cover of book 3: Devil’s Food. Bonus point to this series for having a recipe at the end of each book.

Baking is an alchemical process for Corinna Chapman. At four am she starts work at Earthly Delights, her bakery in Calico Alley.

But one morning Corinna receives a threatening note saying “The wages of sin is death” and finds a syringe in her cat’s paw. A blue-faced junkie has collapsed in the dark alley and a mysterious man with beautiful eyes appears with a plan for Corinna and her bread. Then it is Goths, dead drug addicts, witchcraft, a homeless boy and a missing girl and it seems she will never get those muffins cooked in time.

With flair, chutzpah and a talent for kneading, Corinna Chapman will find out who exactly is threatening her life and bake some beautiful bread.
