Top 5… books I LOVED that others DIDN’T

Today’s Top 5 Tuesday is ‘books I loved that others didn’t’, and is hosted by the super lovely Shanah over at the Bionic Bookworm, and you can check out her page here (please do, she’s amazing). Shanah, you’re killing me with this topic!

This is kind of interesting because different people like all sorts of different things, and when we say ‘others’, I’m probably going to reference the people on Goodreads that I am friends with, because I’m sure there are ‘others’ in the world who did love these books, otherwise they wouldn’t have been published. (Also, I totally trawled through my GR’s friends’ book rating lists for these because it turns out we all like the same things…)

AAoK
An Abundance of Katherines
  • John Green’s An Abundance of Katherines seems to be pretty hit and miss. I really enjoyed it as it’s a story about growing up and finding yourself, but apparently not everyone felt the same way. Personally, it’s not my fave of his books (my faves are Looking for Alaska and Paper Towns) but it’s #3 on my list (note: I have not read Turtles All the Way Down as yet). And for a John Green book, it’s pretty care-free.
ACOWAR
A Court of Wings and Ruin
  • A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J Maas was not the best ending to a trilogy; however, I don’t think it deserved some of the hate it got. In fact, I still gave it 5/5 (really 4.5 but I round up on GR), which may have been down to how much I loved ACOMAF than ACOWAR itself, but we all know how much happier I am when the author kills off characters, so that’s how I think it could have been improved.
The One
The One
  • The One by Kiera Cass was an interesting premise. The series is like a crossover between The Bachelor and The Hunger Games, and this book was to be the end of the series, but then  Cass released another two books that follow the next generation. I actually really enjoyed the last book, much more than the first one, but I can see how it would irk people, given that it’s the same story for three books, just with more violent outcomes from the surrounding environment.

Clockwork Angel
Clockwork Angel
  • The Infernal Devices books by Cassandra Clare are coming up a lot on my comparisons on GR. Particularly Clockwork Angel, and I have no idea why. I genuinely can’t remember the book that well (so it clearly left an impression), but as to the series as a whole, I enjoyed it far more than I did The Mortal Instruments – although TMI has been somewhat sullied by the TV show and the movie (both of which I cannot stand).
DOSAB
Daughter of Smoke and Bone
  • To my greatest dismay, Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor is rounding out my list of five. However, it took me two DNFs of the first book to really get into it, so I can kind of see why people would be hesitant to keep going, but it’s so GOOD! Anyway, if these are on anyone’s DNF piles, please have another go. I promise it’s a slow start, but wow does it pick up in the best way.

Next week’s topic will have me hiding in shame, so I look forward to that as well…

Happy reading!
