Top 5 books I acquired on my hiatus
Hello friends!! Welcome to Top 5 Tuesday!! This week’s topic is a freebie, and I will be talking about the top 5 books I acquired on my hiatus!!
Friends, I inadvertently had a hiatus. However, I am back.
I was feeling down and frustrated about the issues I was having with my blog back in August. Posts weren’t automatically posting, and there was an issue with the capacity/memory. Plus the hosting plan was costing me SO MUCH money. I don’t earn anything from this โ I choose to not have advertisements and I never will if I can help it. I don’t do collabs and I won’t sell anything that I wouldn’t buy. This blog is MY space and I want it to be a fun place to visit.
I was in the middle of changing to a new hosting plan when I went on vacation with my mum to Greece. We went for six weeks and it was the best thing I’ve done in years. I swam and lay on beaches. We went to ancient temples and walked every day. And we ate amazing food. As a destination I could not recommend Greece more. I might write a holiday recap post for the (very sad) travel section. I came back refreshed and bursting with ideas.
When I got home I volunteered at the Canberra Writer’s Festival. I met a bunch of authors and readers, and had fantastic chats about books. It made me want to change my whole blog and also try and do more author interviews. (Top 5 Tuesday won’t go anywhere!) But I need space to work through those ideas, soย perhaps a change for 2026.
Since then I’ve been getting back into a routine. And what I realised is that while I really needed my accidental hiatus, I also missed this. This little piece of the internet is my creative outlet and where I can wax lyrical about all the books that I’ve been reading (and buying).
For the weeks that I missed I still need to decide on how I will catch up. I might purchase an inlinkz account for a couple of months so we can have more than two linkz running at a time. Let me know in the comments if you’re interested in posting your links to my catch up posts over the rest of the year.
TLDR, I’m back. I’m sorry for being away for so long โ it really wasn’t intentional! Anyway, without any further ado, let’s go see my top 5 books I acquired on my hiatus!!

InLinkz reminder
A reminder to everyone before we begin. We’re using InLinkz! What this means is you will be in charge of linking your own posts here! Rather than me scouring the web (or my spreadsheet) for them. I will be posting ahead of everyone because of *timezones*. So, it should be easy for everyone to drop links for your posts.
Upcoming topics
The Top 5 Tuesday July-September 2025 topics are out now!! But because of blog posting limits that I don’t have time to fix yet (sorry!!), you can see them on my Google Sheets account thingy. In fact, you can see the topics for the whole of 2025 here!! The date format is DD/MM/YY, and topics are listed by month. You can even click on tabs for previous years and check out past topics too!!
Top 5 Tuesday was created by Shanah @ Bionic Book Worm, and is now being hosted here @ Meeghan reads.

top 5 books I acquired on my hiatus
Rapture โ Emily Maguire

Hazelthorn โ C.G. Drews
Evander has lived like a ghost in the forgotten corners of the Hazelthorn estate ever since he was taken in by his reclusive billionaire guardian, Byron Lennox-Hall, when he was a child. For his safety, Evander has been given three ironclad rules to follow:
He can never leave the estate. He can never go into the gardens. And most importantly, he can never again be left alone with Byron’s charming, underachieving grandson, Laurie.
That last rule has been in place ever since Laurie tried to kill Evander seven years ago, and yet somehow Evander is still obsessed with him.
When Byron suddenly dies, Evander inherits Hazelthornโs immense gothic mansion and acres of sprawling grounds, along with the entirety of the Lennox-Hall family’s vast wealth. But Evander’s sure his guardian was murdered, and Laurie may be the only one who can help him find the killer before they come for Evander next.
Perhaps even more concerning is how the overgrown garden is refusing to stay behind its walls, slipping its vines and spores deeper into the house with each passing day. As the familyโs dark secrets unravel alongside the growing horror of their terribly alive, bloodthirsty garden, Evander needs to find out what heโs really inheriting before the garden demands to be fed once more.

The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy โ Megan Bannen

Hart is a marshal, tasked with patrolling the strange and magical wilds of Tanria. Itโs an unforgiving job, and Hartโs got nothing but time to ponder his loneliness.
Mercy never has a moment to herself. Sheโs been single-handedly keeping Birdsall & Son Undertakers afloat in defiance of sullen jerks like Hart, who seems to have a gift for showing up right when her patience is thinnest.
After yet another exasperating run-in with Mercy, Hart finds himself penning a letter addressed simply to โA Friendโ. Much to his surprise, an anonymous letter comes back in return, and a tentative friendship is born.
If only Hart knew heโs been baring his soul to the person who infuriates him most โ Mercy. As the dangers from Tanria grow closer, so do the unlikely correspondents. But can their blossoming romance survive the fated discovery that their pen pals are their worst nightmares โ each other?
Fangs for Nothing โ Steffanie Holmes
Lord Alaric Valerian has a problem. His mother is visiting his castle for the first time, but she doesnโt know that Alaric has filled every room with centuries of his artistic projects.
Desperate, he hires professional organiser Winnie Preston to help him tame the mess. Yet Alaric isnโt prepared for bubbly, passionate Winnie to show up at his castle โ she sets his fangs on edge, but the more he works with her, the more he wishes she could be his.
To complicate things further, Alaricโs mother arrives with a surprise in tow: a bride. Shocked and dismayed, Alaric convinces Winnie to pretend to be his fiancรฉe to avoid the dreaded union. What could go wrong? For one thing, Winnie still doesnโt know Alaricโs a vampire, and for another, Winnieโs meddling book club suspects Alaric of a mysterious murder in the village.
Will their maybe-not-so-fake relationship survive once Winnie discovers the monster that lurks beneath his fangs?

Swordcrossed โ Freya Marske

Mattinesh Jay, dutiful heir to his struggling family business, needs to hire an experienced swordsman to serve as best man for his arranged marriage. Sword-challenge at the ceremony could destroy all hope of restoring his family’s wealth, something that Matti has been trying โ and failing โ to do for the past ten years.
What he can afford, unfortunately, is part-time con artist and full-time charming menace Luca Piere.
Luca, for his part, is trying to reinvent himself in a new city. All he wants to do is make some easy money and try to forget the crime he committed in his hometown. He didn’t plan on being blackmailed into giving sword lessons to a chronically responsible โ and inconveniently handsome โ wool merchant like Matti.
However, neither Matti’s business troubles nor Luca himself are quite what they seem. As the days count down to Matti’s wedding, the two of them become entangled in the intrigue and sabotage that have brought Matti’s house to the brink of ruin. And when Luca’s secrets threaten to drive a blade through their growing alliance, both Matti and Luca will have to answer the question: how many lies are you prepared to strip away when the truth could mean losing everything you want?

I keep hearing good things about C.G. Drews’s books, and they sound really atmospheric! I may have to add one to my TBR…
Re. catching up, I don’t know what others will think, but genuinely, I’m not that worried about being able to post in the linkies for the T5T posts I’ve done over the past couple of months – I still had fun doing them, and that’s the main thing”

Ok, thatโs great feedback, so thank you!!
Also, I cannot recommend CGโs books more!! Iโve been a fan since their debut in 2018. They are all dark and yet so beautiful. Atmospheric is a great descriptor, but I would also adopt all of their characters.
