Top 5 bookish resolutions for 2023

Hello friends!! Welcome to Top 5 Tuesday!! This week’s topic is top 5 bookish resolutions for 2023!!

You know how last week I said I really love doing the anticipated reads post because it shows me all the shiny new books that I want to buy?? Well I’ve decided that I hate the bookish resolutions post for the exact same reason. It shows me all the ways that I am going to fail this year. Because that is what has happened literally every year I have written this post. (See case in point: 2022 resolutions, 2021 resolutions.)

Clip from Taylor Swift's song Anti-Hero with the lyrics 'It's me. Hi. I'm the problem, it's me.'
I am THE problem child.

Which means you may be thinking to yourself, Meegs, you dummy, if you hate this post why do we do it every year? That’s a really good question. And one I can’t really answer except to say, but you all really love it!! I think?!

So, this year I’m making ANTI-RESOLUTIONS. Because who can say no to a little reverse-psychology?! Does it work if it’s on yourself?? (Asking for a friend.) (Also, that isn’t what anti-resolutions are. See more below.)

If you missed the January-March 2023 topics, they are out now!! Top 5 Tuesday was created by Shanah @ Bionic Book Worm, and is now being hosted here @ Meeghan reads.

top 5 bookish ANTI-resolutions for 2023

If you’re not sure what’s going on here, don’t worry, it’s a completely normal feeling for 2023. And my life in general. Likely my blog too. (I’m so sorry.)

However, I read this really cool article at work the other day about how we should stop making resolutions that we likely won’t keep and then berating ourselves for them (see above Tay Tay gif). And instead, make ANTI-resolutions. This is a promise to stop doing things that we don’t want to any longer. Kind of like a way to no longer reinforce negative behaviours in our lives. And I LOVED it. I’m only really sorry that I didn’t make this a thing for everyone. But hey, we have a freebie week coming up soon?!

TBR? What TBR?

It might surprise you to know that I have a TBR. It has about 450-ish books on it at last count. FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTY UNREAD PHYSICAL BOOKS. And you know what? That’s ok.

I keep seeing all these posts on bookstagram and book-tok about how sometimes, books need to age like a fine wine. Maybe that book isn’t ready for me to read it yet, just like I’m not ready to read IT yet. And you know what? That’s ok. It will happen when it happens. Or it won’t. Maybe I’ll be crushed to death by my TBR instead and the cats will feast on my remains. That’s ok too.

Kindle Unlimited is my library

I couldn’t figure out how to make that an anti-resolution because I’m tired. And possibly a little bit morbid (see above anti-resolution). Maybe I’ve rewatched Wednesday too many times.

ANYWAY, it’s ok if I just read books from KU for the next 12 months. I have a subscription. I may as well not waste it. Besides, it’s so much easier reading books at work if I do it on my phone… right?!

PLUS no late fees, no auto-returns while I’m reading, no waitlist, and no having to leave my house. Best library ever!

Twitter is dead.

I don’t care if this is considered un-Australian (because the guy was born here, not because anyone here actually likes him). But Twitter is dead to me while Elon Musk owns it. DEAD.

That’s actually all I really have to say about that one. Not a single pithy remark. Huh.

I will post what I can, when I can

I’m making this one worth TWO anti-resolutions because I’m including the blog, bookstagram and book-tok. And maybe that podcast that I’ve been thinking about creating for the last two years.

I am one person, with a very fulfilling and amazing job that I LOVE, with a husband and family and friends that I like hanging out with (occasionally). I also really need my downtime from all of those things because I am a chronic introvert. And sometimes that means that I get really busy (or distracted) and don’t post as often as I could or would like to. That’s also ok. My social media is my space to do what I want, when I want.

Of course, I will always try to post every week for T5T so I can share all of YOUR posts, but it might not be on a Tuesday. It might be on a Sunday night. Three weeks after the fact. But, that’s ok too, because it means that I can share all of your posts IN my original post.

Actually I think this might be a better strategy for everyone moving forward, because then you all get to see my post WITH the participants already included! You know, since I live in the future ― time zone wise, not like actually.

I’m going to stop typing now.

FYI, I have built a database of everyone who know of that has joined a Top 5 Tuesday topic. Which means, I should be able to come and visit blogs every week to find your posts. You won’t necessarily need to link your posts below (unless you want to). But, if you’re new or I’ve not found your blog, please drop a comment below with a link to your post, and I will add you!
