The NOPE. book tag
Good morning bookworms!
So today my schedule (that I try and hold myself to) says I should be posting a book review. But I’m super cranky and I think if I do post a review, it won’t be very nice… and that’s not how I want to do reviews!! LUCKILY the super lovely J R Lynn at Eternity Books has tagged me in what is probably the best ever tag to do in my current frame of mind! The NOPE. book tag!! (I’m surprisingly happy to be doing this right now…)
NOTE: I apologise in advance for the ranting that you are all going to read below. This is a super aggressive form of cranky that I RARELY show ever. Not just on the blog.
NOPE. ending: A book ending that made you go NOPE either in denial, rage or simply because the ending was crappy.
The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw wins this NOPE. Which was REALLY disappointing because I loved the entire book, right up to the ending, and then I wanted to bleach my brain. I’m still cranky about it.
Honorable mentions go to Autoboyography and The Hazel Wood. Their endings could have been better! (Wow, I’m feeling super ranty tonight, aren’t I?!)
NOPE. protagonist: A main character you dislike and drives you crazy.
I’m going with Feyre from Maas’ ACOTAR trilogy (series?). I mean, she starts off as a badass, but by book three she’s super whiny and having a man ‘completes her’ (this is not good role modeling for the modern gal). And, in book FOUR. OMFG. Drinking and throwing money at things is NOT A WAY TO HELP PTSD. Also, way to slut-shame your sister.
NOPE. series: A series that turned out to be a huge pile of nope after you’ve invested all of that time and energy on it.
OMFG the Hush, Hush series by Becca Fitzpatrick. FOUR BOOKS. FOUR. BOOKS. I haven’t said it on my blog yet, but I read 3.75 of them, and then DNF’ed the last one. I just couldn’t force myself to care enough to read the last 70 pages. I think I still rated it, but, I just. Stopped. CARING.
NOPE. pairing: A “ship” you don’t support.
ROMIONE!!! I don’t get it!! Also, I wish Rowling had killed off Ron. (Super popular opinion, I know.) I think Hermione had better banter with Fred (re-read the skiving snackbox bits from OotP and put a flirty lens over it – tell me you don’t see it!), AND I just never got on board with Hermione being happy with Ron. She would walk all over him and the relationship would never be on an equal footing. They would both end up sad and resentful of the other. Fred on the other hand would be able to argue with Hermione. They’d have sparks and chemistry, and with Fred being a super successful business person, they’d be equals in their relationship.
I know this is a hard subject for Romione fans… and I’m sorry. Kind of. (Not really.)
NOPE. plot twist: A twist you didn’t see coming and didn’t like.
Uhhhhh… I’m usually ok with plot twists. I’m even ok with killing off super important characters (as evidenced by this discussion post). Oh! I know. The one in ACOWAR (yes, this will be more Maas-shaming) where Rhys pulled the other person back with him. (Sorry this is vague… I’m trying not to do spoilers…)
NOPE. genre: A genre you will never read.
Thrillers. Horror. True crime. A LOT of non-fiction. Particularly war history books. Or just history books in general.
NOPE. book format: A book format you hate and avoid buying until it comes out in a different edition.
I haven’t really given audiobooks a try, so I’m not willing to say that. But, if there’s a choice between ebook, paperback and hardcover – I go for the hardcover 90% of the time. And the paperback the other 10%.
NOPE. trope: A trope that makes you go NOPE.
Insta-love. Love triangles. Insta-love love triangles. ?
NOPE. recommendation: A book recommendation that is constantly pushed at you, that you simply refuse to read.
Uhhhh, again, I don’t really have one for this. Thriller / horror books maybe? Oh, Allen and Unwin have sent me a couple of thrillers that I passed on with love to a friend who does read them. Does that count? (BUT THANKS FOR SENDING ME BOOKS!! I LOVE YOU!!)
NOPE. cliché: A cliché or writing pet peeve that always makes you roll your eyes.
Just lazy writing, really. If you’re going to set a scene, then SET THE SCENE. Don’t be all “they went here and the coffee was good”. Or, build meaningful relationships. Not everything is about sex. Also, it would be nice to see a character who is confident in their sexuality and the number of partners they have had. Why do guys get high-fived while women are put down??!! (I’m getting crankier now…)
NOPE. love interest: A love interest that’s not worthy of being one.
(Can I say Ron again? No? OK, let me think about it…)
Jacin from The Lunar Chronicles. He just really annoyed me. Double-crossing, backstabbing, snakey jerk! *shakes fist at Jacin* And Winter was so precious and sweet and deserved waaaaaaaaay better than him.
NOPE. book: A book that shouldn’t have existed.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. (Do I need to explain this??)
NOPE. villain: A villain you would hate to cross.
None. I will cross them all. There’s a bunch of anti-heroes I totally wouldn’t cross though. Mostly for fear of being stabbed. Mia Corvere, Jude Duarte, Alosa, Princess Lira… huh… they’re all also ladies. (HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY!!!! Did you like that sneak in? You’re welcome. xx)
NOPE. death: A character death that still haunts you.
Probably just Fred. Although, the one at the end of The King’s Men (while deserved) was brutal. In fact, most of the deaths in that book were brutal. Gun violence is not an option kids. But I’m ok with death and killing characters. (See above link.)
NOPE. author: An author you had a bad experience reading and have decided to quit.
My answer for this is either none, or I’m so less full of vitriol after ranting my anger out that I can’t think of any…? Also, it’s not always the author’s fault a book is not-great. Sometimes the editor, publisher and agent has to take some responsibility too. (OMG, look how calm I am now!)
TAGGING!
Umm, YOU! If you’re having a crappy day (either now or in 4 weeks’ time), then I highly recommend doing this tag and spewing out all that crankiness. It’s been therapeutic!! ?
Until next time, happy reading ??

Most amazing cranky ranting ever Meeghan! (Oh and btw, I’m FINALLY back…it turn out that I didn’t need those flares ?) I love this so much. Except the part where you said you’ll never read thrillers. I’m just going to close my eyes and pretend I never saw that ? But great post?!

Haha, thanks!!!! I am a total scaredy-cat and watched far too many twilight zone, x-files and zombie things when I was a youngling. I was also subjected to a vinyl recording of War of the Worlds at the age of seven, permanently freaking me out about aliens and world invasions for the remainder of history (thanks, parents). Surprisingly I didn’t develop an aversion to reading sci-fi.
But I’m glad you’re back and didn’t need those flares!! x
J R Lynn
Wow… okay that justifies it a little, lol. And I am also glad that I didn’t need those flares too 🙂

LOL I agree about Hush, Hush, I never bothered with the last one because they were just so annoying and I couldn’t care to continue

Like, I want to read it because I literally have 70 pages left of a 4 book series. But on the other hand, I think I’d only be happy if they all died at the end? Because, I just don’t care!!

I’m so tired of seeing Insta-love in books, it’s SO unbelievable, it needs to stop. And love your answers, your honesty is EVERYTHING ??????

Oh I really like this tag a lot. I deff agree with The Wicked Deep. I read that last year because of the hype. I enjoyed the story overall but wasn’t a fan of the romance or the ending. It was such a shame cause I really liked the backstory behind the town.
Meeghan reads
Exactly!!! The ending was so disappointing. But the rest of the book was amazing!!

The author does have a new book coming out in November. I am interested in checking it out. It has a beautiful cover like The Wicked Deep.
Meeghan reads
I’ll probably still read it ??
bookishinbed
Yeah I wanna check it out. I like giving authors another chance. I mean I did enjoy most of The Wicked Deep so still worth checking out.

Beware Of The Reader
Bwahahahaha Romione! Yes I do agree with you on that one! As for the ending that I could not stand take your pick between Divergent and The 5th Wave! Oh and enjoy your weekend away.
Elysa
Divergent was the first thing that came to my mind for nope ending.
Meeghan reads
Hahaha, I’ve heard all about it but never actually read it!!
Elysa
Only read it if you need a bonfire after having an absolutely phenomenal read that is then ruined in the last 20 pages.
Meeghan reads
Thanks Sophie!! I’ve enjoyed it so much I forgot to upload a post last night ?
I don’t think I’ll ever read Divergent or The 5th Wave, I’ve heard too many negative things about them!!
