October 2020 book haul
Good morning bookworms!! It’s time for the October 2020 book haul!!
October was slightly out of control, but I’m refusing to take responsibility because I got A LOT of review books last month. Which is great because it means publishers are liking me. But it’s also bad because I now have more review books that I can read for the rest of this year…
Book haul categories are as follows:
- subscription boxes
- book purchases (book mail, in-store, digital* and gifts)
- review copies (book mail and digital)
* Not counting Kindle Unlimited

October 2020 book haul
I subscribe to four monthly boxes: OwlCrate, FairyLoot and the book-only subscription for LitJoy and Illumicrate. International shipping is still an absolute shit show… but it is getting better… Maybe. So, here is where I stand with books that arrived in October:
- ? = arrived in a previous month
- ✅ = arrived in October
- ? = in transit
- ➡️ = skipped
- ?️ = parked (not out yet)
- ❌ = confirmed that it was lost to the mail gremlins (but thankfully refunded)
Owlcrate | FairyLoot | LitJoy | Illumicrate | |
August | ➡️ | ❌ | ? | N/A |
September | ➡️ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
October | ➡️ | ➡️ | ➡️ | ? |
Special Editions | ?️ How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories |
? Blood & Honey ?️ ?️ |
?️ Daughter of Smoke and Bone |
Meaning, the following books arrived in October:
- The September theme for FairyLoot was Under the Sea and the book was Fable by Adrienne Young (I actually didn’t like the exclusive cover for this one, so I sold the whole box to a friend for cost price and will have to order a new copy for myself…)
- LitJoy’s September theme was Favourite Fictional Families and the book was The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix
- Illumicrate’s september theme was Sinister Surroundings, and the book was A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik
I’ve also skipped all of the November boxes, except Illumicrate, so expect to see less of these as time goes on.
I… was not very well behaved with my purchases this month… But on the plus side, there’s not many books that I want that are coming out for the rest of the year, so I should be ok!! However, I’m really proud of myself because I did read FOUR of them this month too!!

I also have a confession to make. Last month I bought Kiss My Cupcake by Helena Hunting. And I was reading it, and it was great. Then I left it on a plane (surprisingly this is NOT the first time this has happened). Anyway, I re-purchased a copy of it too, but I haven’t recorded it on my spreadsheets, because I don’t want to look back and remind myself of how much of an idiot I am… ?
*cough* OK, this got a bit crazy in October… I ended up receiving SIX review books (one of which I then got a double from a book box…). Which is not great, because I am definitely falling VERY far behind on reading these…

Ooh, Fence! Did you like it? Is it just a novelisation of the comics? No spoilers for the further issues because I need to pick them (all) up.
I mean… we could do a buddy read of Gilded Wolves/Silvered Serpents… ??

Fence Striking Distance is set after Fence Rivals (Vol 4 of graphic novels) so there is a spoiler of who is on the team. But you also get a deeper look into the motivations and insights of the characters. It’s really good, I loved it. And there’s a second novel coming out too.
