O.W.L.s read-a-thon TBR 2020

Good morning book wizards and witches!

IT’S O.WL.s TIME AGAIN!!!

If you don’t know what O.W.L.s are then… you should read Harry Potter. OR you can watch Gintare’s video on YouTube about it!!

But, very basically, Gintare (@BookRoast) runs a bi-annual read-a-thon based on the fifth and seventh year wizarding tests at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. O.W.L.s (Ordinary Wizarding Levels) are the fifth year tests, and in April we read a bunch of books that correspond to prompts the Gintare changes each year. The aim is to pick subjects that you would need to pass in order to be a specific profession when you grow up (like Auror, Magizoologist or Hogwarts professor).

Career

So, last year I couldn’t make my mind up on what career I wanted to try for, so I went for basically everything… cue stress

This year I’ve gotten it down to THREE professions!!

  • Curse Breaker (Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, Charms, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Potions, Transfiguration)
  • Magizoologist (Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, Herbology, Potions)
  • Potioneer (Arithmancy, Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, Herbology, Potions)

So, in order to qualify for these at the N.E.W.T.s level, I will need to complete:

  • Ancient Runes
  • Arithmancy
  • Care of Magical Creatures
  • Charms
  • Defence Against the Dark Arts (DADA)
  • Herbology
  • Potions
  • Transfiguration

Also, Gintare has added some ‘extra’ in the forms of seminars and things, so I’m putting my hand up for Animagus Training, and Dragon Tamer Training!!

O.W.L.s TBR

So, with all of that in mind, these are my prompts and potential books I will read for the OWLs read-a-thon (in the order(ish) that I will try and read them).

Subject

Prompt

Book to Read

Ancient Runes Heart Rune: Read a book with a heart on the cover The Long Distance Playlist – Tara Eglington
Arithmancy Magical qualities of number 2: balance / opposites – read something outside of your favourite genre War – Laura Thalassa
or
Aurora Rising – Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Care of Magical Creatures Hippogriffs: creature with a beak on the cover The Girl Who Speaks Bear – Sophie Anderson

Herbology Mimbulus Mimbletonia: book that starts with M The Map From Here to There – Emery Lord *

Transfiguration  Animagus lecture: read a book / series that includes shapeshifting  A Vigil in the Mourning – Hailey Turner
Dragon Training (extra) Read a book with dragons Ice Wolves – Amie Kaufman

So, given we all know how crap I am at sticking to TBRs, some of these may change!! But I will try and stick to the prompts this time!!

  • Disclaimer: I have started this, but I’m only 20 pages in, so I’m counting it. It was much harder than I thought to find an ‘M’ book that I WANTED to read this month!!
What books are you reading in April?

until next time, happy reading! Meeghan xo
