Mini reviews: No Fences in Alaska, Save Me & Hush, Hush series
Good morning bookworms!
So, as you may know, I’m not really a DNF’er. I like the concept, but I usually feel like I owe it to the book to finish what I have started. However, there are some exceptions to the rule! So, this is my mini reviews: the DNF edition!

No Fences in Alaska blurb:
Their worlds are about to come crashing down…
At sixteen years old, Harper Lyon’s life is spinning out of control. She threatens her parents with suicide unless she can meet her drug-dealing boyfriend, a college student who doesn’t know she’s pregnant. Cooper Lyons, her estranged grandfather, lives in rural Alaska with only his dog and cat for company. He has just been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s, and he doesn’t plan on letting the disease run its course. Harper needs to escape her parents and decide what to do about the baby. She and her grandpa are worlds apart, but they may be exactly what the other needs. When Harper calls her grandfather, he welcomes the opportunity to help her and redeem his previous failure with his daughter Heather, who died from a drug overdose years ago.
Can they save each other?
OK, I have to say that I did like the writing with this one. But I could not get past the content, which should have had so many trigger warnings, including: assisted suicide, abortion, drug abuse, underage drinking, drug and alcohol abuse while pregnant… I mean, there’s a huge difference between suicide (hinted at in the blurb) and asking your 16-year-old, pregnant, drug-addicted granddaughter to help you kill yourself.
Also, I really did not like Harper. I don’t know if she gets better as the book goes on, but I found her unnecessarily abrasive and too smart for her own good. The lengths she goes to when blackmailing her parents was horrific. Essentially, this one was a no for me.
I received a digital ARC of this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Save Me blurb:
Seven boys. Best friends. Their fates intertwined through the good times together, but also the tough times, as they have gone their separate ways and suffered greatly as a result. When all is almost lost for these boys, one is given a special chance to go back in time and help his friends fix the mistakes that led them down this path. He’ll do anything to save them, but can he? Or is he too late?
I think I read about 9 episodes of this. And there’s only 15, but… I just didn’t care what was happening. I was literally reading it because it was easy and accessible on my phone, and that’s when I realised I had better things to do with my time.
It’s a little bit like a sci-fi version of Groundhog Day, or Source Code, if you would like a more recent example (also, Jake is much better looking than Bill…), where this kid is trying to save his group of friends, except he hasn’t spoken to them in years and has no idea where they are or what they’re doing. It’s kind of confusing and I just wasn’t enjoying it.

Hush, Hush (Hush, Hush #1) blurb:
Romance was not part of Nora Grey’s plan. She’s never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how hard her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch comes along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Patch draws Nora to him against her better judgment.
But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora’s not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is and seems to know more about her than her closest friends. She can’t decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.
For she is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen – and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost Nora her life.
I will freely admit, that I read 3.8 books in this series. In fact, of the FOUR BOOKS, I only had 80 pages left until I finished the entire series. And I honestly, could not force myself to read those last 80 pages to save my life. Welllll, maybe to save my life. But I wouldn’t care about the ending.
Nora was so whiny, and Patch was a total jerk, and Vee was the worst best friend in the history of best friends and the whole ‘family’ scenario had me rolling my eyes so hard I thought I was going to give myself a brain aneurysm. Ooof. This is the series I am most annoyed that I read so much of.
Don’t get me wrong, if I had read this when I was 16 I probably would have GUSHED about it, but I’m (mostly) a grown adult. I mean, I had a brand new kitchen table delivered yesterday. And I’ve read far more compelling and interesting stories about angels than this one. (Seriously, Fallen was better than this. And Daughter of Smoke and Bone wins all the contests!)
So, that’s the three most recent books that I have DNF’ed… in fact, that’s all the books this year that I have DNf’ed.
Do you DNF? What books have you DNF’ed recently?

I could not agree more about No Fences in Alaska, I think my content warnings list was almost as long as my review! I had to stop every few paragraphs to mark something else so I’d remember to include it, and I really didn’t like the characters either – Harper in particular I couldn’t muster much (or any) sympathy for.
weirdly, I seem to DNF far more ARCs than backlist books. maybe because backlist books are more likely to have already been read and reviewed by others, so it’s easier for me to gauge whether I’ll actually like them? whereas with ARCs I’m mostly going off the synopsis and cover, and they always look and sound so good!

That’s so true… I’m on an ARC ban now anyway!! (Please hold me to that!!) Maybe we need pre-ARC readers so we will know if we will like them!! ?

ooooh yes, one of the things I did love about BookSirens is that they let you read a sampler of each ARC before you commit! and since you could only download one per day (at least while I was using it) it helped keep things under control and there was some more pressure to make sure you *really* wanted that ARC.

That sounds great!!! Netgalley should definitely employ the sampler first!!
