May 2022 book haul

Hello bookworms!! Welcome to the May 2022 book haul!! A monthly post where I talk about all the books that I hauled in the previous month.

Well friends, my plan was to catch up on all the blogging I missed in May last weekend. Unfortunately that plan went out the window when I ended up in hospital for salmonella food poisoning instead. Let me tell you now, that is not a fun experience. I had sore ribs for days afterwards from how hard I was vomiting. We then had a super busy week in the office, and I AM TIRED. I’m hoping that things go back to normal soon as I would very much like to catch up. And maybe also finish a book sometime soon?!

This year there won’t be any shaming for buying excess than my haul goals. In saying that, my haul goals this year are to only buy books I will read immediately, so that’s a step in the right direction. The main goal for the year, is to buy less books than I read. I’m trying not to increase my TBR this year. 😓

So, let’s go see the books I hauled in May!!

May 2022 book haul

Book haul categories are as follows:

  • book boxes (monthly/quarterly subscription or special edition book boxes)
  • review copies (book mail, digital and gifts)
  • book purchases (book mail, in-store and ebook*)

* Not counting Kindle Unlimited

book boxes

I subscribe to a bunch of book boxes that I usually skip because 2022 is the year of cutting back.

And in May, I had one book arrive, the May FairyLoot (book-only adult sub) which was Book of Night by Holly Black. And, holy heck, just LOOK at that naked cover. For reference, it also came with a dust jacket, but it’s just the normal UK hardcover dust jacket.

To note, I literally got this book on Tuesday 31 May, so I haven’t started it yet. Click through for the original photo on Insta.

book purchases

During May, I only purchased one book in store, and received one preorder in the mail. So, two books total is a success!!

review copies

And, May review books were my absolute downfall. I got sent 7 physical review books. SEVEN. And to be honest, I’m not even going to include one of them because it’s so far off brand I’m not even sure why I got it. (PLEASE stop sending me adult true-crime / thriller / horror books!! I won’t even take them out of the box!! They go directly to my donate pile.)

So… what does this all mean for my book buying limit for 2022? This is where my strategic counting comes to play.

Recap: I had one book-box book, and two book purchases. Plus, of the review books I’ll add 5 of them to the TBR. So now we tally up the physical TBR vs what I have read this year to see how much trouble I am in.

As at the end of April, I was at a +5 to the TBR for the year. Including May’s haul, I am now at +13 in total (5+8).

Read: I read 7 books in May; however, only 3 of them were ticks off the actual TBR.

So, all in all, the TBR is now at a +10 for the year (13-3). It’s not awful, but I’d definitely like it to be closer to zero… or in the negatives!!

What was in your May 2022 book haul?

until next time, happy reading! Meeghan xo
