January 2024 book haul

Hello friends!! Welcome to the January 2024 book haul!! A post where I talk about all the books that I bought and received in the previous month.

Now, it has been a hot minute since we’ve been doing these… A whole year in fact. And while I could have bunched a few of these together while we catch up, I’ve decided not to because some months has been a veritable spending spree of books. And games. (Because yes, I will be adding in video games too this year. And I am sourcing a banner header for it.)

Of course, the main goal for the year is to buy less books than I read. As I trying not to increase my TBR each year, although I seem to inevitably fail every year anyway. And, as per normal, there is a round up of TBR increase/decrease at the end.

So, let’s go see the books (and games) I hauled in January!!

January 2024 book haul

Book haul categories are as follows:

    • book boxes (monthly/quarterly subscription or special edition book boxes)
    • review copies (book mail, digital and gifts)
    • book purchases (book mail, in-store and ebook*)
    • video games

* Not counting Kindle Unlimited

book boxes

I subscribe to a bunch of book boxes that I occasionally skip (I used to skip more but they have limits on these things now).

In January 2024, I had five books arrive:

  • To Kill a Shadow by Katherine Quinn (OwlCrate YA book only sub for December)
  • Her Radiant Curse by Elizabeth Lim (FairyLoot special edition)
  • What the River Knows by Isabel Ibañez (FairyLoot YA book only sub for December)
  • The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent (OwlCrate Adult book only sub for December)
  • A Fragile Enchantment by Allison Saft (FairyLoot YA book only sub for January)

As always, photos link through to photo owner’s instagram and show extra details such as sprayed/stenciled edges, custom end pages, naked hardcovers, reversible dust jackets, etc.

review copies

I received zero review books in January!! This is going to be very light on this year because I am only requesting books that I genuinely want to read immediately.

game purchases

YAY!! Games that I bought!! This is a new sub-heading because sometimes I just enjoy screaming about games that I play. And y sometimes, I mean frequently. And while I am terrible at finishing (and then reviewing) games, this gives me another opportunity.

In January, I bought five games. Well, technically I bought one on 30 December, but I’m including it because I’m nice like that. All of these were on my Nintendo Switch. They are:

  • Tunic (Dec purchase)
  • Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
  • Spirit of the North
  • Family Mysteries 3: Criminal Mindset
  • Dorfromantik

Now, what you’ll see from my purchases is that they tend to fall into one of three categories:

  • Cosy fantasy adventure games with a lovely story (usually these have a ghost/spirit, or a bear/fox — I don’t know what this says about me except that I have a type)
  • Puzzle / mystery games (these are sometimes point and click)
  • Lego adventure games (and therefore the combat is easy and you just run around doing side quests and collecting coins)

However, Husband is trying to get me to expand my repertoire so we’ll see how that goes during 2024.

Tunic video game cover. A fox wearing a green tunic is holding a sword and a red and blue shield in front of a forest. The word TUNIC is above it with some fantasy language above and below the word.
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga cover. A range of Lego style Star Wars characters, including Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, holding light sabers.
Spirit of the North cover. A fox and a ghost fox are on a dark blue background, possibly the artic.
Family Mysteries 3: Criminal Minds cover. The main character of the game, a caucasian blonde young woman, is leaning over a microscope. The background is a lab, with purple and green hues.
Dorfromantik cover. Stacked tiles depicting landscapes on a blue background with the words DORF ROMANTIK. The top stacked tile has a windmill.

physical TBR tally

So… what does this all mean for my TBR in 2024? Thank goodness I now have a giant TBR spreadsheet, as well as an even bigger spreadsheet of ALL of my books to figure it all out for me. If you want to check out the spreadsheets you’ll also see that I have new columns for digital (ebook and audiobooks) books. They count for my Goodreads goal of reading, but not my physical TBR counting. Mostly because they don’t take up any space in my home library, which is expanding at an unprecedented rate… So, the numbers now stand at:

  • Commenced 2024 with physical TBR: 545
  • Increased physical TBR in 2024 by: 7
  • Subtotal physical TBR: 552
  • Read physical books: 7
  • Unhauled physical books on my TBR: 0
  • TBR variance: 0

My goal in 2024 is to not increase the physical TBR number. Which means that whatever I bring in this years, I have to equally read that number of physical books. However, I’m actually going to allow myself a small window of 5 books and set my cap at 550 for 2024. Let’s see how long this lasts…
