Holidays ’18 TBR

Good morning bookworms!

I’m on holidays! And I’m in the middle of packing my suitcase for our trip north to see our families! And because we’re taking the car, I can pack AS MANY BOOKS AS I WANT because there isn’t a luggage weight limit. Also, we’ll be gone for almost three weeks, so I’ll definitely want to pack a few!

Now, my December TBR has been a disaster to date, so I’m throwing it out and starting again with a ‘Holiday TBR’. Basically, this is my process of validating which books I’m going to pack and why in the hopes that if I do it in a public forum my husband can’t say “you’re not taking all these books” because my response will be “but I have to because I already told everyone this is what I’ll be reading”. It all makes sense in my head…

So! Books that I am packing on our 2.5 week long road trip (where I will be either reading in the car or reading in whichever house we’ll be staying at and hiding from family).

Christmas reads at my family’s house (22-31 December):

  • Finale by Becca Fitzpatrick: I kind of want to DNF this series, but at the same time, I’m so close to finishing it that I feel like I should just keep going. I’m hoping my procrastination at getting to this doesn’t cause a slump!
  • Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett: I’ll be reading this for December’s Discworld read-a-thon.
  • My True Love Gave to Me edited by Stephanie Perkins: I have been meaning to read this one all month, and I’m hoping that by reading it sooner rather than later it will put me in the holiday spirit!
  • Lady Midnight, Lord of Shadows and Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare. I’m intentionally packing these as I own the AUS/NZ paperbacks so they’ll be easier to pack than a bunch of hardcovers!

Poolside reads for January with the husband’s family (1-8 January):

  • Kat and Meg Conquer the World by Anna Priemaza
  • The Summer of Jordi Perez by Amy Spalding
  • Surprise Me by Sophie Kinsella
  • My Not So Secret Life by Sophie Kinsella
  • Open Summer Road by Emery Lord
  • Geekerella by Ashley Poston
  • Autoboyography by Christina Lauren
  • War Storm by Victoria Aveyard
  • Hunted by Meagan Spooner
  • Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

Now, I’m under no illusions that I’m going to get through all of these, but I also know that as a mood reader, I’m better off packing a selection of book genres. I do know that I generally prefer contemporary fiction during summer, but I’ve got some heavy fantasy in there as well just in case!

Most of these are just stand-alone contemporaries with no real need of explanation, except, I want to read them and they’re currently occupying space on my bookshelf and my giant TBR pile (and they’re part of my Beat the Backlist list). However, there are some that I want to read so I can move on with my life (I’m looking at YOU War Storm). But, Hunted is on there because Meagan Spooner has a new novel coming out in 2019 (Sherwood) and I need more retellings in my life… clearly.

I have also thrown in a seemingly random classic, but let me tell you why. You see, I’ve never read Jane Eyre. In fact, the only Brontë sister book I’ve read is Wuthering Heights – and I hated it. However, on my giant TBR for 2019 is the Lady Janies series by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand and Jodi Meadows. One of them (My Plain Jane, I think) is a retelling of Jane Eyre, so I figure I should probably read the original first. Because, that’s a thing in my head (like I should always read the book before I see the movie and I only eat M&Ms in twos – I’m weird, sorry).

I will still be posting a December wrap-up and January TBR in early January, and I’ll also be doing a larger 2018 wrap up (with graphs and things primarily inspired by someone’s blog I saw a few months ago… I just can’t remember whose)! I’m also still thinking that I’ll be doing my NEWTs in January so I need to figure that out as well… I might start plotting that now. ? I probably should have done it before I did this post… but, oh well!

Anyway, that’s enough rambling from me! Until next time, happy reading! ??
