December ’19 book haul

Good morning bookworms, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Happy New Year gif with a black cat wearing a party hat and holding a sparkler saying "Happy New Year!"

I’m gonna be honest, it feels kind of weird being New Years at the moment. Our fireworks got canceled a week ago because of the total fire ban in place with all of our bushfires.* We’ve had friends be evacuated from their homes yesterday and a lot of people spent the night at basketball stadiums and emergency evacuation centres. Highways have been closed, and it’s a little scary here. Certainly not the start to the 2020 that any of us wanted.

* If you’re not aware, Australia has been battling an abnormally high number of bushfires since 11 November 2019. There has been over 3.125 million hectares of land burnt. We’ve lost homes, people including some volunteer firefighters, and so much livestock and native animals. Despite what some ‘experts’ are saying, we haven’t ever seen bushfires like this in my 36 years, and I genuinely hope that we get rain soon – we’re also in a drought – so, it hasn’t been the best Christmas / New Year for some. The smoke from all the fires also means that the air outside is hazardous to breathe, and even with additional volunteer firefighters coming over from amazing countries like Canada, the sheer number of fires means that they have no idea when they’ll be able to get them under control. In terms of wildlife losses, there is a real possibility that koalas may end up on the endangered species list because they can’t move fast enough to get out of the way. Entire koala sanctuaries have been burnt to the ground.

Now that Debbie Downer has been to visit and ruined all your fun, let’s get into my book haul for December!

Book haul categories are as follows:

  • book boxes
  • book purchases (book mail, in-store, digital* and gifts)
  • review copies (book mail and digital), and
  • bookish items (book related, but not actual books).

* Not counting Kindle Unlimited

I subscribe to three monthly boxes: OwlCrate, FairyLoot and the book-only subscription for LitJoy.

  • LitJoy’s December theme was Lost in Austen, and the book was Dangerous Alliance: An Austentacious Romance by Jennieke Cohen
  • OwlCrate’s December theme was Tales of Trickery, and the book was The Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White.

I cancelled my FairyLoot for December. (You’ll see this a lot for 2020!!)

This is definitely the smallest haul I got for 2019, and to be honest, this is the size I want to see moving forward for 2020!

Of these books, two of them were Christmas presents (HP4 and The Girl Who Speaks Bear) so I’m actually a little proud of myself!!

I did get three physical copy review books though… but I’ve already read one, so, WINNING!!

I was gifted the Always Fully Booked planner for 2020 as part of my Christmas present this year. It’s amazing. Megan @ Little Inkling Designs does such a beautiful job with it each year, and I’m so pleased with it and the improvements she has made this year. It’s just lovely. These aren’t my pictures, but I’m sure you’ll see some during the year!
