WWW Wednesday — 1 January 2025

Hello friends, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Welcome to this week’s WWW Wednesday — 1 January 2025!! Which kind of feels like a wrap of for 2024.

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words, where you answer the three following questions:

  • What did you recently finish?

  • What are you currently reading?

  • And, what do you think you’ll read next?

Let’s see what I have been reading… (All images will link to Goodreads if you click on them. Potentially.)

WWW Wednesday — 1 January 2025

Well, I scraped through by the edge of the teeth for my book club picks for December. Which means that technically, I finished my year perfectly because I read all the books that I said I would in last week’s post. And you can’t fault that. Well, I can’t anyway.

Plus, I read a book from my 2024 12 in 12 challenge. Winning!!

what i finished

Can't Spell Treason Without Tea by Rebecca Thorne
Hooked by Emily McIntire
Matching All the Way by Veronica Eden

Author: Rebecca Thorne
Series: Tomes and Tea #1

Book Club friends got my rant… but this book was fine. Unless you love unresolved stories, somewhat plotless chapters where nothing happens, and a weird origin story in the epilogue. Which should have been a prologue. Then I guess you’d love it. I thought it was a cosy fantasy mystery, but it’s not. It’s cute and sapphic, but I was expecting more. Sorry.
I might continue this series.

Title: Hooked
Author: Emily McIntire
Series: Never After #1
Released: 5 Sep 2021
Read: December 2024

The more I think about this book, the more I want to rate it 1 star. Maybe I will. This book felt like I was reading YA Peter Pan fanfic, where the author shoved as many references into this as possible. And they aren’t clever. It’s also not fantasy (like I assumed), but a “dark romance” where the darkness is just stalking, gratuitous violence and breath play. All of which I’m fine with if it’s written well. This was not.

Title: Matching All the Way
Author: Veronica Eden
Series: N/A
Released: 18 Dec 2023
Read: December 2024
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
An older brother’s best friend, forbidden love, ice hockey romance. NOT set at university. That has diverse characters who are supported by friends and family. What a wonderful book to end the year on. I laughed, I cried, my heart melted. Not sure why (maybe the title?) but I thought it was a Christmas romance. There is a Christmas IN the book, but also just over a year of other holidays and events too. It was sweet and spicy.

what i'm reading

I’m actually not reading anything at the moment. I decided not to continue Powerless by Lauren Roberts, and rather than start something random, my plan is to take a day, and then start on my book club picks from tomorrow.

what's up next

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

I know I only read Fourth Wing in 2024, but it’s up first for my book club pick in 2025. Then we’re reading Iron Flame. All in preparation for Onyx Storm‘s release in late January.

I will likely be audiobooking this one this time around, because I am planning to paint my home office and reorganise my home library. Including adding a shelf to the tops of my Billy bookcases on one wall. So, it’s the perfect time to listen while I work. I also purchased the audio for Iron Flame in case I have time to listen to it as well.

If I get a chance to read from a physical book in the next week, my plan is to start my buddy read with DB for The Witch King.

And if I need an ebook to pick up as well then I can always read A Novel Love Story by Ashley Poston. I do love reading her books in January my summer.
