Book recommendations: Overwatch edition #3

Good morning bookworms!

Welcome back to another edition of… books I would recommend to Overwatch characters! (Click here for edition 1, and edition 2!)

So, I must admit, I was expecting some new characters to be announced at BlizzCon earlier this month… but they announced Overwatch 2 instead!! Which is exciting!! It’s still in development, but I’m looking forward to finding out more!! And the new short made me cry (not surprising… but it was a happy cry), and I can’t wait to show you it after we get through all these ones!!

So, today’s video that I’m going to share is Widowmaker’s story. This one isn’t very sad, but it definitely shows you the dark side of Widow, and you also get to see some Tracer action and part of the omnic war. I mean, this whole game’s world building is just amazing. I’m finally getting to the digital comics and they are so good – I can’t believe I didn’t read them sooner!!

Each of the videos go for a maximum of 10 mins, but TRUST ME, the production is AMAZING, and you won’t regret watching this at all, even if you don’t like or play video games! It’s just like watching a Disney animated short.

Alive

So, now you’ve seen the first ‘baddie’ short, let’s meet the players!!

Also, side note, because I am NYXL trash… the three characters here are main characters of three of my favourite team members. Pine plays Widowmaker (and McCree who is also very cool), Saebyeolbe plays Tracer, and Jjonak plays Zenyatta.

WIDOWMAKER

Widowmaker

BIOGRAPHY
Real Name: Amélie Lacroix
Age: 33
Occupation: Assassin
Base of Operations: Annecy, France
Affiliation: Talon
Role: DPS

BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS

Ahhh, Widow. I love her meanness and complete disregard for feelings. Plus, she’s a sniper assassin… and we all know how much I love assassins… (I’m so sorry for being weird…)

OK. Book recs. I’m going to start with Grim Lovelies by Megan Shepherd. It’s set in France and I also think that Widow would like how Anouk remakes herself in the sequel too. Plus, beasties!! And speaking of beasts, let’s add in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets as Widow might become friends with Aragog… *shudders*

We also need an assassin story in here, so let’s go with Nevernight by Jay Kristoff. I think Mia and Widow could be friends in another world!! Or maybe Widow would like Spiderkiller?! (Or maybe not!!) I’m adding a second one with The Cruel Prince by Holly Black because I think she’d also enjoy Jude’s stabbiness!

I think she’d like the darkness of Leigh Bardugo’s Ninth House, and I’m adding Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice as well for the same reason.

TRACER

Tracer

BIOGRAPHY
Real Name: Lena Oxton
Age: 26
Occupation: Adventurer
Base of Operations: London, England
Affiliation: Overwatch (formerly)
Role: DPS

BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS

Tracer borders on annoyingly upbeat – there seems to be very little that makes her upset or cross, so the first book we are adding to her pile is The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers, because I think Tracer would really like Kizzy. Plus, adventurer!

Speaking of adventure, I’m also adding in The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee (plus has Brits in it). And we need something fast paced with lots of explosions (for Tracer’s abilities) so let’s go with Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff and also Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo for Alina’s light show.

Finally, we need some books set in the UK. Two of my absolute faves are Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, and Heartstopper by Alice Oseman. I think Tracer would also like the soft boys love story of Heartstopper.

ZENYATTA

Zenyatta

BIOGRAPHY
Real Name: Tekhartha Zenyatta
Age: 20
Occupation: Wandering Guru, Adventurer
Base of Operations: Shambali Monastery, Nepal (formerly)
Affiliation: The Shambali (formerly)
Role: Support

BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS

What books would you recommend an omnic (omniscient robot) monk?! Well, let’s find out! Firstly,  I have to add Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, because if AIDAN isn’t a warning that all Omnics should be aware of, then I don’t know what is! I also want to add Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick, because I think Zen would finally be able to answer this question.

We also have to add The Art of Happiness by the Dalai Lama, and probably Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, because I feel like they would be necessary books for any guru, wandering or otherwise.

I’m adding in Down and Out in Kathmandu by Jennifer S. Alderson because it’s set in Nepal (and Thailand). And finally, for some monk representation, I’m adding Thief of Time by Terry Pratchett (because everyone should read a Discworld novel, including omnics).

What are some recommendations you would give to these characters?
