Book recommendations: Overwatch edition #2

Good morning bookworms!

Welcome back to another edition of… books I would recommend to Overwatch characters! (Click HERE for edition 1)

Also, shout out to my team New York Excelsior (NYXL) for their hard work in the play-offs. The Vancouver game was hard to watch, and while they pulled off a stunning win for a couple of maps, they eventually went down 4-3. 😭😭 We’ll get them next year!!

So, today’s backstory that I’m going to share is Reinhardt. This is another terribly sad story with a beautiful redemption arc, and OMG, even hubs cried in this one. 😭💔😭💔 You also meet Brigitte who is Reinhardt’s god-daughter, AND the daughter of Torbjörn from last week.

Each of the videos go for a maximum of 10 mins, but TRUST ME, the production is AMAZING, and you won’t regret watching this at all, even if you don’t like or play video games! It’s just like watching a Disney animated short.

Honor and Glory

So, now you’ve cried into your tissues, let’s get to the next FOUR character’s book recommendations! If you want to read more about them, just click on their names, and their profiles will pop up, and then click on ‘Story’ to learn more!

REINHARDT

Reinhardt

BIOGRAPHY
Real Name: Reinhardt Wilhelm
Age: 61
Occupation: Adventurer
Base of Operations: Stuttgart, Germany
Affiliation: Overwatch (formerly)
Role: Tank
Origin story above

BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS

Ok, Reinhardt is from Germany (also the home of the Grimm brothers) so we need some fairytale retellings in here. I’m going with Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik.

I also want some books that deal with war, so we’re adding in The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak, and Captive Prince by C. S. Pacat. But he’s impetuous so we also need a flavour of that in here, so we’ll add Red Rising by Pierce Brown.

Finally, we need some books that have a call to action. I quite like Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard for this, and there has to be an element of sacrifice as well, so I’m also adding The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

BRIGITTE

Brigitte

BIOGRAPHY
Real Name: Brigitte Lindholm
Age: 23
Occupation: Mechanical Engineer, Adventurer
Base of Operations: Gothenburg, Sweden
Affiliation: None
Role: Support
Origin story

BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS

I’ve gotta be honest. I recommended Torbjörn The Boy Who Steals Houses by C. G. Drews for the father / daughter relationship, so that’s the first one I’ll be recommending to Brigitte as well. I’m also adding Sabriel by Garth Nix in for this same reason.

We need some kick-ass ladies in this, so I’m adding Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas (also that gold armour is giving me Kingdom of Ash vibes), and I’m also going to add in Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo because I feel a little like Brigitte hasn’t quite found her way yet and she needs that call to action and to understand the legacy of those who raised her.

We also need a book about some amazing female engineers to get her juices flowing, so I’m adding Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly.

Finally, a Swedish adventurer that I could not wait to tell Brigitte all about is Pippi Longstocking (or Pippi Långstrump) by Astrid Lindgren, which was one of my faves growing up.

JUNKRAT

Junkrat

BIOGRAPHY
Real Name: Jamison Fawkes
Age: 25
Occupation: Anarchist, Thief, Demolitionist, Mercenary, Scavenger
Base of Operations: Junkertown, Australia (formerly)
Affiliation: Junkers (formerly)
Role: DPS
Origin story

BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS

Ahhhh, Junkrat. How I equally love and loathe thee. Love because he is the only character with the Aussie accent and he just loves to blow stuff up. Loathe because he is an idiot, and really is not the best ambassador for our lovely country. Much like Roadhog, I kind of just want to give him movie recommendations like Mad Max, XXX and Suicide Squad because that’s the type of character he is. Chaos and Destruction would be his middle names. However, I’ll persevere and find him some books.

First up, with a last name like that and a gift for pyrotechnics, we have to gift him Fawkes by Nadine Brandes.

Secondly, if Roadhog (Junkrat’s partner in crime from last week) got given Ice Station by Matthew Reilly, then Junkrat definitely gets Seven Ancient Wonders – they’re different series with lots of explosions, the characters crossover, and we hit the Aussie author mark to boot. I’m also adding in some dystopian books for good measure, and since Roadhog got LIFEL1K3, then Junkrat is getting Divergent by Veronica Roth, but I’m also adding in Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi.

Finally, as a thief and scavenger, I’m adding The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, and The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson.

SIGMA

Sigma

BIOGRAPHY
Real Name: Siebren de Kuiper
Age: 62
Occupation: Astrophysicist
Base of Operations: The Hague, Netherlands (formerly)
Affiliation: Talon
Role: Tank
Origin story

BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS

Sigma is actually one of those characters that I find mildly terrifying, but also interesting!! Also, his recommendations are kind of… intense!!

Firstly, he has an affinity for classical music, so we put A Thousand Perfect Notes by C. G. Drews at the top of this pile. Also, going along this theme, we want to give him books about mental health, because he goes through quite a bit of trauma, so I’m adding The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky and Made You Up by Francesca Zappia.

Sigma has developed an ‘ability’, and my fave book about people with special powers is The Rook by Daniel O’Malley. I also want a ‘sciencey’ book (look how technical I am!) because Sigma is an astrophysicist, so I’ve added Nyxia by Scott Reintgen.

Finally, I’m adding The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton for two reasons: one, it’s set in the Netherlands, as that’s where Sigma is from. But also, he’s in this strange situation where he’s being taken advantage of, and I think a person like the Miniaturist might help him be able to see that!

What are some recommendations you would give to these characters?

  1. The Rook is perfect for Sigma! And Red Rising for Reinhardt??? *chefs kiss* I love all the recs, and all these characters (I’m really with you on Junkrat’s idiocy though). This was such a fun post! I can’t wait to see more!
