Top 5… magical creatures

Good morning bookworms!

Today’s Top 5 Tuesday is ‘magical creatures’. Top 5 Tuesday is hosted by the super lovely Shanah over at the Bionic Bookworm. You can visit her here, and join in for Top 5 Tuesday by checking out all the amazing topics that are coming up!

Magical creatures is basically a winning category for me. I love fantasy (despite what my Goodreads has been saying recently) and I would have about 16 magical creatures as pets if I could!!

Toothless the dragon from How to Train Your Dragon

Let’s start with dragons. I don’t really care what you name them (dragons, wyverns, firedrakes, scaldrons) I would have one. To keep it in the house, I’d probably get a mini one – firedrake or scaldron size – but whichever it was I’d definitely want a want a warm, scaly, fire-breather nearby. Especially if they act like Toothless.

Clip from the Fantastic Beasts franchise where Newt Scamander is tickling the niffler and gold and jewellery comes out of his pouch

Leaning a little towards the HP spectrum of animals, I’d definitely like a niffler. Nifflers, to me, basically look like a cross between two Aussie marsupials, a platypus and an echidna. They both lay eggs and I dunno, I feel like a Niffler might as well. I know that Newt seems to get into a lot of trouble with his one, but he’s such a rascally cute creature that I don’t think I could stay mad at him for long. Also I would absolutely encourage him now to break into banks and steal all the money. 🤫

Clip from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix where Harry is looking at the Thestrals

Keeping with my HP theme for another minute, the thestrals always fascinated me. I know they’re supposed to be scary looking, but I always found kelpies and capaill uisce far more terrifying than thestrals. Besides being totally practical (you can fly them, ride them, and they can take you places without directions) they may not freak your friends and family out because it’s entirely possible they won’t even know they are there. Also handy if you’re renting and the real estate won’t let you have pets.

Clip from Brave where Merida is chasing will o' the wisps

Another of my fave magical creatures are will-o’-the-wisps. Depending on the mythology you look into, they could also be faeries, hinkypunks, púca or pixies. While, predominantly they are said to lead you into marshes and off the paths to your peril, they can also be signs of hope (admittedly more false hope than actual hope). But these creatures themselves aren’t meant to cause harm… just lead you into the way of others that might.

Scene from The Little Mermaid where Ariel has little seahorses swimming around her

I don’t know if I would want a mermaid as a pet, but I’d definitely like to be one myself. Again, depending on which mythology you subscribe to, sirens and mermaids are kind of fierce, and may not be as pretty as Disney makes them out to be. But nevertheless, I’d like to try it… for about a week… or until I saw a shark!

Until next time, happy reading 😊📚

      1. Oooh, there’s also Mogget from Garth Nix’s Old Kingdom series, and Emerald/Emmy from The Redemption of Althalus, and Church from Shadowhunters (there’s no way Church is a normal cat), and Maruman from Obernewtyn. They’re all super sassy as well. 😂

  1. I so LOVE that gif with the dragon (because I adored that cute movie LOL). As far as mermaids are concerned Ariel is OK but not the more frightening ones that we recently got in the literature!
