2019 Mid-year freak out!

Good evening bookworms!
A couple of weeks ago, the lovely Shanah @ The Bionic Bookworm tagged me to do the mid-year freak out book tag. And I’m late to the party because I seem to be late at everything lately… Also, I’ve seen a couple of different variations of this one, so I’ve merged them because I like answering lots of questions.

How much have you read?

According to Goodreads, I have read 58 books, which must mean that I have actually read 59 as I did read a sneaky beta in the there as well.

What have you been reading?

Umm, like a mixture of everything?!

What I've read this year by genre (Contemporary 18, Crime 1, Fantasy 21, Historical Fiction 2, Humour 1, Manga 6, Romance 7, Sci-Fi 2, and Thriller 1)
What I’ve read this year by genre

What I've read this year by age group (Adult 24, New Adult 5, Young Adult 25, and Middle Grade 6)
What I’ve read this year by age group

(So, I know the consensus is pie charts, but I like a good bar/column graph too…)
Results conclude a lot of Adult and YA, and a lot of contemporary and fantasy.

What is the best book you’ve read so far this year?

You can’t make me choose!! I won’t do it!! I’ll give you a top 10 though…

What is your favourite sequel this year?

Without a doubt it has to be… The Wicked King by Holly Black (Book 2 of The Folk of the Air)

What is a new release that you haven’t read yet, but really want to?

Uhhh… all of them? Seriously my TBR is insane. If I had to pick one, I’d probably go with Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan.

What is your most anticipated release for the second half of the year?

Arghhh!! Again, I’m finding it difficult to pick one…

What was your biggest disappointment of the year so far?

Definitely Becoming His Monster by Amelia Hutchins. I read books 1 and 2 of this paranormal series last year and LOVED them. Book 3 came out in January and… well… it was really bad. I thought maybe I was alone on this, but (thankfully) other were in agreement!

What was your biggest surprise so far this year?

Sorry I’m Late, I didn’t want to come by Jessica Pan. I thought the book would be funny, but not to the extent that it was. Part hilarious memoir, part self-help, this book had me in stitches, but also in tears at parts. If you’re an introvert I can’t recommend this one enough!

What rereads have you read this year?

I’ve actually only read 2 rereads so far this year:

Who is a new favourite author? (Either new to you or debut)

Oh this is so hard because I’ve read a total of TWENTY SIX new (to me) authors this year! OK, I’m going to be brutal (yes, this is me being brutal) – this is my top 5!!

  1. Brigid Kemmerer
  2. Sally Thorne
  3. Jessica Townsend
  4. Mary H. K. Choi
  5. Mackenzi Lee
Who is your new fictional crush?

Andrew Minyard. I don’t know why. I seem to like psychotic guys, ok? Psychotic guys and girls that could slice me open. I have a type… and it’s mildly terrifying.

Who is your new favourite character?

Morrigan Crow. She’d sooner glare at me than let me hug her, but we could wear black together and read Emily the Strange graphic novels. (I think Mog would approve of this idea.)

What is a book that made you cry?

Uhh, I’d be harder pressed to find one that hasn’t made me cry… what is wrong with me?!
I think I cried the MOST while reading The House with Chicken Legs by Sophie Anderson.

What is a book that made you happy?

Happy?? <ERROR> Does not compute.
Jokes… Probably The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang. It was super cute, and the last part of the story made my little black heart burst with joy. LOVED IT.

What is your favourite book to movie adaptation that you’ve seen this year?

Uhhh… can I say Good Omens? Because I haven’t read the book yet so I am LOVING it. I mean, I was expecting it to be The Rook by Daniel O’Malley, but I watched episode 1 this week… and they cut out my FAVOURITE CHARACTERS. So, it’s dead to me. (Although my husband LOVES it…) At least Good Omens can’t disappoint me, and bonus points for David Tennant.

What is your favourite blog post you’ve published this year?

Errrrr… ummm, I don’t know? I’m not a rereader of my own content. I barely reread it for editing once I’ve written it, so this is difficult for me. I am enjoying writing my new discussion post series, which is probably less a discussion and more me ranting about things… (namely JK Rowling…) If you’re interested, here they are:

What is the most beautiful book that you’ve bought or received so far this year?

Do pre-orders count? Because I bought the Waterstones edition of Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell and the sprayed edges are floral to match Baz’s suit and I think I died when the confirmation came through.
If we’re talking books in my hands, then it’s probably a toss up between Songs About a Girl by Chris Russell (which was the ultimate cover buy – that cover is foil WITH a hologram… I like shiny things, ok?) and Starfell: Willow Moss and the Lost Day by Dominique Valente.

What are some of the books that you need to read by the end of the year?

Review books aside, these are the ones that I really want to knock off my TBR/backlist this year:

  • Grishaverse trilogy – Leigh Bardugo
  • The Night Circus – Erin Morgenstern
  • Superman: Dawnbreaker – Matt de la Peña
  • Strange the Dreamer duology – Laini Taylor
  • Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine – Gail Honeyman
  • 99 Percent Mine – Sally Thorne
  • Shadow of the Fox – Julie Kagawa

So there you have it friends, my mid-year tally… I’m not tagging anyone because I think most of you have done this… and it’s basically mid July – so if you haven’t, then I AM tagging you!

merging variations of a tag is actually The Move, why choose when you can just have fun with *all* the questions?
you’ve got quite a distribution of books; contemporary & fantasy (especially YA) are currently dominating my read list too! I finally read the Wicked King (in like, 2 sittings bc I just could not put it down or pause to take notes) and it was as good as everyone was yelling wow. and QoN and Wayward Son are definitely on my top-anticipated too. you definitely need to read The Night Circus, I want to know what you think of it!!
also heck yes for Good Omens, I’m so glad I have Amazon Prime (or well my dad does, so by extension I do too) so I can rewatch it over and over and over. Crowley is definitely my favorite, but I am blown away by David Tennant and Michael Sheen’s on-screen chemistry, like damn. and the whole cast is just amazing tbh. just goes to show you what good things can happen when the original book author is allowed control of the adaptation, really.

I know!!!! I’m so here for authors having involvement in adaptations!! I think this might be why I love the first two HP movies best. Also why I’m so glad that Maggie Stiefvater wrote at least the pilot script for The Raven Boys!!
