Top 5… summer reads

Today’s Top 5 Tuesday is ‘top 5 winter reads’. Top 5 Tuesday is hosted by the super lovely Shanah over at the Bionic Bookworm. You can visit her here, and join in for Top 5 Tuesday by checking out all the amazing topics we have coming up!

So, I know that this week’s topic is top 5 winter reads, but … I live in Australia and we’re coming into summer. So, I’m changing it! (Sorry Shanah!) So, let’s get into some amazing books that I love reading in summer!

Adored

Adored by Tilly Bagshawe is one of my fave chick-lit drama-fueled reads. It’s got everything you would ever want in a contemporary novel: sex, fame, lies, family-drama, deception, and revenge. It’s the perfect beach read.

What If

If you’re looking for a New York summer adventure story with the sweetest MCs, then What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera is the cutest book around. Less depressing than your standard Silvera book, but not as sweet as Albertalli’s writing either, these two temper each other (much like Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff), but with lots of HP and Hamilton references and the most adorable queer characters that you just want to have the most perfect time together.

Queens of Geek

Now, I know it’s on the other side of the globe, but if you’re in the US and you’re looking for a fun summer read in July and it’s convention time, you cannot go past Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde. Yes, this is more queer characters for you, but also a super sweet coming of age story with an MC that has anxiety. I loved this one, and it’s a quick read too.

The Nanny

If you’re looking for something a bit lighter and slightly more adult, then Melissa Nathan‘s books are for you, but I particularly love The Nanny (although she does a wicked Pride and Prejudice retelling as well: Pride, Prejudice and Jasmine Field). The Nanny has nothing to do with a former beauty sales rep in Queens, and lots to do with a girl who has packed up her bags and chucked her boyfriend, heading to London for a fresh start. Filled with heart-warming disaster and laugh out loud moments, this is an amazing story and one of five brilliant books by a wonderful author.

Carry On

And finally, just a splash of fantasy in an otherwise contemporary world, I bring you Rainbow Rowell’s Carry On. If you don’t know about this one, you must be living under a rock. Rowell’s acclaimed story of Fangirl follows Cath as she write Simon Snow fanfiction, and then Rowell killed us all by releasing said Simon Snow story as AN ACTUAL BOOK. Yes, this is Simon’s story, and I cannot wait for Wayward Son to be released in 2019. That’s right people, Simon and Baz are getting a sequel, and it’s in my top 5 anticipated releases for 2019. I am SO EXCITED!

So, that’s my top 5 summer recommendations for you. Hopefully in my autumn next year Shanah will do the opposite, and I’ll tell you about my top 5 winter reads!! Until then, happy reading! 😊📚
