August ’18 wrap-up (OWLs challenge) and September TBR

PHEW! For the first time in I don’t know how long, I read more books that I got for the month. Basically I think I now deserve a Nobel bookish prize for outstanding contributions to my TBR. Is that a thing? If not, can we make it a thing?

August wrap-up – OWLs challenge results!

WOOT! I got my OWLs (also known as Ordinary Wizarding Tests) by reading a book or story relating to a prompt for each of the subjects that I was interested in gaining results for! This here is my original post where I said I would complete the challenge, and this is my mid-month update.

So, I achieved the subjects that I wanted to get, but definitely not with the books I thought I would read! In fact, I ended up leaving my comparison table to show you how nothing worked like I thought it would!

Subject

Prompt

Book I thought I’d read

Book I actually read

Ancient Runes A book with a symbol on the cover Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo
Arithmancy A book with a number on the cover or in the title A Thousand Perfect Notes by CG Drews A Thousand Perfect Notes by CG Drews
Astronomy A science fiction novel Warcross by Marie Lu The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
Care of Magical Creatures A book that has magical creatures in it or on the cover The Seafarer’s Kiss by Julia Ember To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo
Charms A fantasy book The Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchett The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw
Defence Against the Dark Arts A book about secret societies or clubs The Rook by Daniel O’Malley The Price Guide to the Occult by Leslye Watson
Divination A book featuring prophecies Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend Percy Jackson and The Stolen Chariot by Rick Riordan
Herbology A book with a nature related word in the title Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

Transfiguration A book about transfiguration/shape-shifting or a book with a cat on the cover Who’s Afraid by Maria Lewis How (Not) to Kiss a Toad by Elizabeth A Reeves

And I didn’t read books for Muggle Studies or History of Magic, as I thought I wouldn’t.

Apart from this list, I also read Fence issue #9 by CS Pacat, so I actually read 9 books, 1 short story and 1 comic, and I skim read The Light Fantastic (which I didn’t count for my OWLs). The normal list format is below.

September TBR

After such a giant month, I’ve actually decided what a great motivation having a goal was, that wasn’t a strict TBR list. I’m a huge mood reader, and my list was a moving feast during the month as many of the books could have gone against different topics. I’m not going to do my NEWTs straight away as I think I need a month where I won’t be working as I will have 30 prompts to respond to (3 levels for 10 subjects)!

So, I have decided that I will be doing a reading ‘bingo’ for the month instead of setting a list. My aim for the month will be to complete 2 rows/columns/diagonals, and the reading bingo I have chosen is from Novel Heartbeat, who I’ve been following for a while on Instagram (this is Jessi’s account). This is actually meant for a whole year bingo (hence the 600 page option), but I’m going to be doing it in September. WOOT! Wish me luck!

If you know of any bookish bingo’s let me know!

Until next time, happy reading! ☺️📚
