Top 5… contemporary fiction (adult and/or young adult)

So… this post is a whole week late because I was sick AND traveling… Booooooo. Also, friendly reminder that Shanah is running Top 5 Tuesdays, and if you’d like to join us, you can contact her over here.

Only about 20% of the books I read (possibly less) are contemporary reads, but I still have my favourites (not in any particular order), so this should be a piece of cake!! (Also, now I want cake…)

Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda

OMG, if you have not read Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli, then for jeebers sake, go read it now. This book is going to define a generation of readers and is also basically a calling to the world that it’s ok to be a) awkward b) unsure c) gay d) all of the above; while you’re in high school.  It also has this amazing lesson on bullying, cyber stalking and coming out to the world.  It’s been a year since I’ve read it, but holy crap do I love this book.  YA Audience. Would also recommend every other book by Becky Albertalli ever. Review here.

BATB

Back After the Break by Anita Notaro is one of the most amazing, sweet, sad and cry-worthy books in the world. It’s one of my all-time fave rereads, and although I haven’t had a chance to reread for the past two years, I still love it to death. You can tell because my copy is literally falling apart (and it’s about 15 years old). Synopsis is Lindsay (MC) goes through a horrendous break up and decides to totally change her life –  only to have it ripped apart again. I cry when I pick it up now because I know what’s coming, but it’s basically therapy now!! Adult audience, suitable for YA/NA as well.

Adored

Adored by Tilly Bagshawe is basically one of the best chick-lit/drama/fiction books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Tilly actually has a bunch of ahhh-mazing books, but this is her first, and while probably not her best, definitely has a special place in my heart. If you’re into TV shows like Dynasty and Riverdale, then grab a copy of this, settle in, and prepare to be floored. Adult audience, but could probably also be read by YA/NA – noting some pretty heavy themes (drugs, abuse, sex). Would also recommend books by her IRL sister, Louise Bagshawe (aka Louise Mensch).

Eleanor and Park

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell is an absolute MUST for this list. Honestly it should be a must on any list ever (except maybe a top fantasy list…). This is a beautiful coming of age story (as are all of Rowell’s), and I honestly sincerely recommend this book to everyone. Again, it touches on bullying and abuse, but also socio-economic statures in society and just how innocent young love truly is. YA audience. Review here.

The Nanny

Rounding out my top 5 is The Nanny by Melissa Nathan (but honestly could have been any of her 5 books that were published before she passed away of cancer). I picked this one as it was the first book of her that I read, and therefore will always have a special place in my heart (as do all first read books). Melissa had an absolute knack with words and all of her books are witty, humorous and such sweet easy reads. Adult audience, but also YA/NA appropriate.

Again, if I were able to add more books I would totally list authors such as John Green, Maggie Alderson, Louise Bagshawe, Francesca Zappia, Emery Lord, Sophie Kinsella, and probably a bunch more. But alas, this is the problem with a top FIVE… I must pick!!
